my wife just got a widescreen lcd comp monitor. the thing is, my comp can't get a high enough resolution to make everything look quite right-recommends 1920x1080. is the only way of achieving this to get a new video card or can i download a driver of sorts?
You could try an updated driver, but the chances it adds a compatible resolution are very low. Your best bet would be a new video card. Just about anything you can get on the market these days will support that resolution.
Agreed that new vid card is probably your answer. You should be able to easily find one for 100 or less. But DONT buy it at best buy. order from some place like Newegg or Amazon, otherwise best buy will make you pay way too much.

We have a 5.5 year old Dell and got a new 21" widescreen monitor. It came with disc that had updated drivers and after installing them it looks awesome. I would investigate new drivers before buying a new vid card.
