    Regional sites for 2010 & 2011 - no Hilton

The NCAA Div. I womens volleyball regional sites were just announced for the next two years, and ISU/Hilton Coliseum did not make the cut. I'm sure the athletic department and CJL are pretty disappointed.

2010: Washington, Penn State, Texas, Dayton

    2011: Florida, Minnesota, Hawaii, Kentucky

Re: Regional sites for 2010 & 2011 - no Hilton

ISU has only had one shot at being a two-round volleyball host. By all accounts, it went well. These other teams have been hosting for years. More first/second round hosting in 2010 and 2011 will lead to a better chance at a regional host spot in the next cycle.

Of course, there's also the matter of trying to schedule MBB, WBB and wrestling around it. ISU wouldn't be able to have any other events in Hilton for four days -- Wednesday (lay SportCourt surface, provided by NCAA), Thursday (practice day), Fri/Sat (competition days).

Hawaii seems like a dumb place to hold a regional, especially for a program that nobody makes money on, considering the cost of shipping everyone out there.

The selection of Dayton as a site is raising eyebrows - they have never hosted a regional before, but have been a 1st/2nd round site a couple of times. Their single match attendance record - about 2,000 - isn't even close to our average.
CJL was pretty confident that with our fan support, we would be picked.

Re: Regional sites for 2010 & 2011 - no Hilton

Remember, it's all about money. If Dayton promised the NCAA a ridiculous amount with their bid, then more power to them. They've also hosted NCAA events in several other sports, so the relationship is there. For some reason, they host that stupid-*** play-in game every year in MBB.

Key points from their press release:
"In two of the last three years UD has hosted the first and second rounds of the NCAA Women’s Volleyball Championship. In addition, the Flyers hosted the 2009 Atlantic 10 Volleyball Championships, the finals was their first nationally-televised broadcast."

"In the next 15 months, five NCAA events will be held at the Arena – the 2010 Men’s Basketball Opening Round, 2010 Women’s Basketball Regional, 2010 Women’s Volleyball Regional, 2011 Men’s Basketball Opening Round and 2011 Women’s Basketball Regional."

Actually, all though Kentucky may have hosted 1st & 2nd rounds, they've not had a regional in at least 20 years. The Coliseum, where they will play, is not where MBB plays or practices - so that may have indeed been an issue with Hilton, IF we even bid for it.

Oh, we bid for it, and it guaranteed exclusive Hilton access for the teams during the regional. Use of the facility was no issue with our bid.

Hawaii is a great place to hold a regional; their huge fan support (by far the best in VB) enables them to guarantee the NCAA a huge amount of money. Even with the NCAA's expenses of flying teams out there, they still make $$$.
