Shirley - No sympathy for Haiti

Makes some good points, but still seems a bit heartless.

Re: Shirley - No sympathy for Haiti

    "bit heartless"?

Wow Paul. Tosses out alot of issues there. As is often the case, I'm not seeing much in the way of solutions.

    Dear Haitians –
First of all, kudos on developing the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. Your commitment to human rights, infrastructure, and birth control should be applauded.
As we prepare to assist you in this difficult time, a polite request: If it’s possible, could you not re-build your island home in the image of its predecessor? Could you not resort to the creation of flimsy shanty- and shack-towns? And could some of you maybe use a condom once in a while?
    Sincerely,
    The Rest of the World
Must be nice to have it all figured out.....

I wonder if he realizes he can lend that generalization to perhaps 75% of the worlds population? Much of Africa, much of Asia, plenty of Central and South America. Decent portions of eastern Europe.

    Is this OUR Paul Shirley?

This is way cold hearted. There are thousands of innocent people hurting badly. Among them children and the elderly and infirm. I would guess that Mr Shirley will stay in a very miniscule minority on this one.

No, your response would have never existed...the butterfly effect.

I didn't comment in order to avoid calling Paul *********. Oops, there I go.

I'm guessing that the thousands upon thousands of children in Haiti have very little say in where they get to live.

    Paul wants attention...it worked.

    That's an incredibily arrogant manifesto..

I think he needs to go down and live there for a year and see if he has all the answers after that experience.

In the midst of all of his judgements, did Shirley stop to realize that is by luck that he himself was born into the world, by upper middle-class parents, in the United States? What did he do to earn that huge break?
What if instead he had been born in Haiti?

For those who have read Paul's book or any of his other articles, his stance should not be surprising. He's always had a pesimistic edge to him.

Re: Shirley - No sympathy for Haiti

Whatever you think of Paul Shirley's comments, I'm impressed by the level of thought and articulation. We don't usually hear much of substance from former athletes.

I think he could have handled GM's 100 offensive sets without having to think too much on the court like WJ!
