    Question for Huxley residents/prior residents

My wife and I are are looking to get out of West Des Moines and to a smaller town, I grew up around Story City, but have never thought of living in Huxley. My wife really likes Huxley, for those that live in town or have lived in town do you recommend it? I currently work in Urbandale so I would have farther drive, but growing up in a small town, West Des Moines is not for me. I see there is a golf course which is a plus, what are property taxes like, is there only one bar, and I have heard the cops in town are no fun? Just wanted some thoughts, since moving to Huxley would be a new town for me, just like ideas. Thanks in advance

Great school system, I know the chief of police, so I might be biased, but they are a lot better than what it was 5-10 years ago. Property taxes might be higher due to the new school being built. Not a big fan of developer Dickson Jensen though. 2 Caseys in a small town is pretty unusual. Shop in Ames or Ankeny and still close to DSM.

I always thought Slater was a neat little town, played some baseball there after high school in an adult league that was a lot of fun. Not sure if they still have it though. Used to be a nice little bar in town with some good food. But remember this was 17 years ago.

Just buy an RV and stay in whatever town you might like for that night, week, month, year, life

But seriously something just bugs me about Huxley, I don't know what it is. Have you checked out Maxwell or Bondurant?

Re: Question for Huxley residents/prior residents

I've got some family in Huxley and although it's really not for me I can kind of see the appeal of it. Obviously like just about anywhere right now the housing market is down and my family members got a house pretty damn cheap. In terms of food there is pretty much nothing, you've got a subway, 2 caseys, a dairy queen and maybe a bar. Cops are still a-holes, speeding tickets still prevalent. I just couldn't live there since I grew up in Ames, I could never stand the Ballard kids, or the Gilbert kids, or the Boone kids, or Nevada kids. We generally didn't like any of the surrounding towns growing up in Ames I guess.

Re: Question for Huxley residents/prior residents

I moved to WDM from Huxley a few years ago - thought it was going to be a great place, but ended up not being so hot. The school system believes their kids are angels, even when they have no respect for peoples property. The cops don't seem to care too much, except when you're speeding through on the way to/from an ISU game. No grocery store, as others mentioned not much along the line of food establishments. I have some family members who grew up in Huxley and they have nothing nice to say about the place.

With gas prices the way they are, both my husband and I working in the WDM area, we decided to get the hell out before it got any worse. The only thing I miss about the place was my big back yard and garage. And maybe being closer to Hilton/Jack Trice.

I would not move to Huxley, you have to go to Ankeny or Ames for everything. Might as well just find a community in one of those two places you like. Or maybe polk city.

Re: Question for Huxley residents/prior residents

I just started working in Ames and the school system is a real concern. A lot of my coworkers live in Huxley because the Ames CSD has gone down the pooper. We currently live on the north side of Ankeny but are looking at some properties that back up to Huxley's soon to be completed sports complex.

Seeing how everyone knows that Huxley is a speed trap, if you stay below the limit for the one mile that you are in the city limits, you should be alright.

I heard Polk City was kind of snooty? Anyone think that, I just heard that, not always a believer of that.
