Could the Tampa Rays be on the move to the Northeast?

MLB.com - The Rays still haven't been able to solve their stadium issue.

Peter Gammons wrote on MLB.com that Tropicana Field is in a tough place, where no one east of Tampa "will drive to" it.

Gammons even hinted that the franchise could be moved up North.

"There are smart people in the Major League Baseball offices wondering if there's hope of even discussing a potential move of the Rays to New Jersey or Southern Connecticut over certain protests from the Yankees, Mets, Red Sox and Phillies," he wrote.

    That would be interesting

Re: Could the Tampa Rays be on the move to the Northeast?

The problem with their location is how far away it is. Went to Tampa for our SID convention a few summers back, but it was going to be a 45-60 minute cab ride down and that was from downtown Tampa.

42-54 Record in CF Mafia. The most games played and wins by any player in Cyclone Fanatic History. Yes, I'm a nerd.

There is really no easy way to the Trop from anywhere in the Bay area... That can work for say 8 games like the NFL but that's asking alot of fans for 82 games.

It amazes me that these florida cities continue to get pro sports franchises. Almost all of them are really poorly supported.

I think they can both succeed if they have good stadiums in areas that are easier to reach. There are plenty of Marlins and Rays fans, it's just not easy to get to games.

I went to a Marlins/Yankees game last summer while in Miami and the crowd was overwhelmingly Yankee fans. The thing I don't understand is if Dolphins Stadium is so hard to reach then why do they show up in droves for football. Though it's my understanding the Marlins are building a new park on the site of the Orange Bowl

Difference here is 8 home football games and 82 home baseball games.

Bingo! and it's always a Sunday. People are much less likely to go to a game if they have to leave work early just to make it there in time.

That is a weak excuse. What do you mean by saying it is hard to get there?

Are you suggesting that the majority of people that go to pro sporting events live within 2-3 miles of the stadium?

The problem with these florida teams is that nobody gives a crap about them. The majority of people in florida are transplanted, and could care less. The Miami Heat, and the Florida Marlins have recently won championships, and they still can't get anybody to the games.

The Marlins local TV ratings are pretty much middle of the pack for MLB, so there are people that care...
