Cubs unlikely to sign sheets may look at Mulder?

The Cubs seek rotation insurance, but the FOX writers confirm ESPN's Jayson Stark Saturday suggestion that Ben Sheets is unlikely. Perhaps Mark Mulder, linked to the Cubs Tuesday by Morosi, is more feasible.

Mulder is done I think, nothing more than a risky reliever project at this point I think with all his injuries. I think if Sheets would come down on his price he's the safer risk.

Re: Cubs unlikely to sign sheets may look at Mulder?

SI.com's Jon Heyman tweets that the Cubs and Rays are looking at Chan Ho Park, who relieved for the Phillies last season.
Park put up a mediocre 4.43 ERA last season after a 3.40 mark in 2008, though his walks and strikeouts stayed fairly steady. Park has been far better as a reliever in both seasons- a 2.52 ERA out of the bullpen in 2009, and a 7.29 ERA as a starter.
Park will be 37 in June, so he's certainly not worth a multi-year deal. But he's a fairly decent option in the middle of the game, and should provide bullpen depth for some team.

That is exactly why we will likely sign him.

Mulder is WAY done.... if we're going to sign a broken pitcher for a high risk/high reward deal... go with sheets...

Re: Cubs unlikely to sign sheets may look at Mulder?

I know the Brewers are looking at Mulder as well. From what i have heard, any contract that he would sign would be either a minor league contract or a low guarentee contract that is heavily incentive laden.

either way, no team is going to spend a lot on him.

The way that post was written makes me think we could sign them both, and maybe Prior to boot.

As a liflelong Cardinal fan that has no particular dislike for the Cubbies, it amazes me how that franchise has no clue when signing players. Former Cardinals Jason Marque, Jim Edmonds and particularly Mark Mulder were available for a reason - their better days are over.

Except Marquis and Edmonds were actually good for the Cubs, so I don't know what you are talking about.

They were. Well, Marquis was a good half-season guy, but that half would be pretty good.

Marquis & Edmonds were certainly servicable but nothing spectacular and I do not recall the Cubs going on to great things in the play-offs. My point is the Cubs brain-trust comes up with some dousey's--remember Milton Bradley? And now even considering Mulder?
