Slow starts in conference play nothing new for ISU

I was curious about what our record was after the first five games of conference play in the last 20 seasons (this season excluded) so I did some research. In only 6 out of the last 20 seasons we have had a winning record after the first five games of conference play ( 1994-1995 3-2, 1995-1996 4-1, 1996-1997 3-2, 1999-2000 4-1, 2000-2001 3-2, 2003-2004 3-2). Our overall record after the first five games in conference play the last 20 years is 41-59. Not trying to defend McDermott here in any way or bash him. Just thought it was an interesting stat.

I do think we often get out to slow starts in conference play and it is always frustrating. Hopefully we can string a few together and get on the right track.

Don't forget about the 0-5 start in 04-05

Didn't forget about it, I was counting the years in when we had a WINNING record after 5 games. The 0-5 start in 04-05 would be one of the 14 seasons out of the last 20 where we had a losing record after five. I listed the 6 years that we had a winning record.

The scheduler never seems to help us out in this department either. It always seems that we have a brutal start to the conference each year.

Im absolutely ok with that. Someday when our dots connect, this will help us greatly come tourny time. Weak schedules sicken me. I know our record isnt saying much this year, but our strength of schedule has pleased me more than other years. Lets just hope it pays off sometime.

People really need to claim down. Of our three loses, two of them were to top 5 teams. The Tech game we should have won, but there was a lot of distractions right then. I think the game at Oklahoma will be a good indicator as to whether this team is going to pack it up or finish the season strong with a chance for NCAA.

Good God, people still think we have a shot at the NCAAs??

Don't confuse hope for a plan.

you could also just go back 16 years (to the 1994-95 season) (including this season, since its a losing record no matter what after 5 games) and it would say that we have had a winning record after the first 5 games in 6 of 16 seasons, leaving 10 seasons in which we have not had a winning record to start the season, and 4 (40%) of those are McDermott's, in only 4 years.

As a matter of fact we do, highly unlikely, but we do. Right up until we lose in the Big 12 tourney we have a shot at the NCAA.

Just remember Baylor last year. They lost to us in Ames, badly and then went on a run in the tourney and almost won it all. Anything can happen no matter how unlikely. Look at our football team this year.
