    Realistic assessment of ISU WBB

I don't have one, but I'm looking for one...

ISU is graduating two core players, just lost RP to transfer, and seems to be lacking the size to contend with the physicality of the Big 12 (i.e. Ms. Paris of OU).

Given the present roster and incoming recruits, will ISU be a serious Big 12 title contender (i.e. a team that can win 12 or more conference games) in the near future?

We have Wieben still, don't we, she is just as tall if not taller I believe. I guess Fennelly has some recruiting to do.

I don't know about contending for the Big 12 title next year but there are some good young players on this team and we have that 6-3 girl from DMACC coming in that should help in the post too. There is a nice core of young players here, some of them will need to step up in bigger roles though.

Next year we should remain pretty set inside even with Rachel leaving. Wieben clearly had emerged as starter along with T. Ross. We pick up Jocelyn in the middle (JC) who if good as advertised will fill in nicely behind Wieben. We lose some depth, but should be OK. Rachel had a ton of talent, but really didn't have the intensity that Bill demands of his girls.

I've been watching some of the women's regional action and the quickness, strength and aggressiveness of those young ladies playing for the elite schools is amazing. We have light years to go before we ever sniff that level.

Re: Realistic assessment of ISU WBB

I think contending for a title is about 95% what you can do and about 5% what else happens in the league. Like this year, A&M beats OK twice, but they still share the season title thanks to K-State, Texas, and ISU. As for what we can control, I too think we're in good shape for the future. Next year we'll have our work cut out for us, but 2, 3, 4 years out I like the direction we going. The loss of Pierson is going to hurt in year 2 and 3 (she'd be a Jr. and Sr.), so I look for Coach Fennelly to address that in recruiting. He's shown he can land players like Welle & Wilkins; and recently like Weiben, Ross, Pierson, Anderson so I believe he'll continue to get those caliber of players.

Re: Realistic assessment of ISU WBB

The major question mark for next year is the point guard position. There is no natural heir to Medders as Lacey, Ezell, Florzak and Bolte(sp? the incoming freshman from ida grove) are all combo guards and not natural 1s. You'll probably see a little different offense next year because of that, and ball handling could be an issue.

Also, Pierson was the only Big 12 post type body that we had. Think of the mens team with all the 6'10" sticks, same problem on the womens side. Some games the quickness will be to our advantage, but defending true posts will take a team effort and usually leave outside shooters open.

I think joepublic is right in that we don't have the natural quickness, strength or aggressiveness of the top tier programs. Because of that the ceiling for this team is probably about #15-20 in the country and #3 in the Big 12. Anything higher than that would take some serious overachieving. (not that it's impossible, or that I won't take Top 25 & top 4 in conference every year)

    my 2 cents.

What about Brittany Lange? She will be eligible next season after sitting out this one because of her transfer from Creighton.

Forgot about her; I'm not sure how much PT she'll get, plus she doesn't look like a true point. She didn't play much for Creighton her freshman year.

I was basically rehashing what I'd read in a Fennelly interview about the point position next year, and he didn't mention Lange.

But in reading her bio I must say that she's a prototypical Fennelly player: She's smart, pretty and shoots the three.

    I wasn't sure if Lange was a point/combo or a pure shooter.

I'll second your assessment of her "prototypical Fennelly player: She's smart, pretty and shoots the three."

Lange is shooter in the 2 mold. Non prototypical in her jet black hair however.

There aren't many like Paris, we'll get over it. Teams have shown that the large post can be beaten. Big 12 refs have been calling displacement pretty closely - speed and positioning will prevail.

Does WBB get a practice facility in The Facilities Plan? If so, we'll take second to no one on facilities - together with the other positives to ISU WBB, we'll compete for athletes. If we keep hanging around in the top four - we'll break through in time. There is an air of positive expectancy which will help raise the tide and all teams.

MBB, WBB and VB will each have their own dedicated practice space according to the early renderings.

Iowa State: Anyone who's a true college basketball fan needs to see a game at Hilton Coliseum. Nice is in the DNA of Iowans and the fans here are particularly gracious -- even when the home team loses but gives a great effort, they are appreciative.

ESPN.com picked Hilton Coliseum as the "Hot Arena" in the Big 12...coaches in the league noted that, "regardless of talent, the Cyclones have a home court like no other."
