Re: Pearl has no interest in Iowa+ I love the last line

I think some Hawk fans have no idea just how hard this is going to be... Although Alford may not have lived up to the expectations the fans had he is still widely respected among the coaching fraternity... Alot of coaches have spoken out on Steve's behalf and how bad of a situation he was in...

I love the fact that the Northwestern State coach is seemingly hardcore interested in this job.

I would also love it if we didn't have 10 new Iowa coaching search threads each day.

Looks like Hawk fans want another person with no interest

Rick Majerus. Why not John Wooden. They are both going to die in the next few years. Hell go get Tony beroni. Check Hawk report for more hillarity...

Mike McConathy is a good coach with a good reputation...however, the hawks would never hire him.

I cheer for two teams, Iowa State and whoever is playing the hawkeyes.

With a committee being involved and their #1 guy spurning them already, this has the makings to be a circus event to find their next coach.

Re: Pearl has no interest in Iowa+ I love the last line

Why would Pearl want to go to Iowa...Tennessee thinks he is a god right now. Not to mention that Pearl was a coach under Tom Davis - Davis was basically screwed by the U of I. I don't understand why he would even consider a school that showed such disrespect for his former head coach.

Re: Pearl has no interest in Iowa+ I love the last line

Bruce Pearl was the only "top tier" coach I saw them even having a chance with. And that chance was at about 5%.

Now that he is out of the picture, they will definately have to look at "lower tier" coaches. Like Altman, Lowry etc. Not that they wouldn't be great coaches, but they're not gonna have as quick of a turn around as Pearl would have.

They're not getting Kruger, Gillespie or even Lowry. I'm gonna go with Altam, which makes me as a Cyclone fan very happy.

It will be a huge circus, but when all is said and done, I bet Dana Altman is their guy. Or. at the very least, they will make a big play for him. If you read HR you get the sense that so many Hawks consider Altman beneath them, and they want him as a last resort. I really hope that the Creighton faithful keep their coach informed of this sentiment. Maybe when the hawks finally get around to offering to him, he'll turn it down, and EIU will have to dip into the Iowa High School BB coaching pool for their next guy.

Basically the same article in the QC Times, minus the Rag EIU "Well, he did say no, but nowadays no doesn't really mean no and he's still are #1 candidate no matter what he says today" bias:

    Pearl not interested in Iowa
By Steve Batterson | Tuesday, March 27, 2007

BREAKING NEWS: (Updated 12:21 p.m.) Scratch Bruce Pearl from the list of possibilities to replace Steve Alford at Iowa.

Pearl, a former Hawkeye assistant who led Tennessee to a Sweet 16 appearance this season, told the Knoxville News that he spoke with Iowa director of athletics Gary Barta this morning, but informed him he plans to remain at the Southeastern Conference school.

“I’m not leaving Tennessee,’’ Pearl told the News.

Pearl said he listened to what Barta had to say “out of respect for their program. I thanked them for their interest.’’

In two seasons, Pearl is 46-29 at Tennessee. He previously coached at Wisconsin-Milwaukee and Southern Indiana.

Re: Pearl has no interest in Iowa+ I love the last line

When what's left of you gets around to what's left to be gotten, what's left to be gotten won't be worth getting, whatever it is you've got left.

I don't even think Altman will take this job. He's got it made in Omaha. Barta is in over his head and this is gonna turn into a fiasco is a few days. Just wait and see. Iowa will get some no name coach who couldn't coach his way out of paper bag. Iowa's program has developed one hell of a black eye for running out good people and good coaches. Anyone with half a brain would stay as far away as possible form Iowa. It doesn't matter what you do, you will never be good enough in their eyes.

Re: Pearl has no interest in Iowa+ I love the last line

I'm kind of torn on this. Sure, Pearl was probably their number 1 guy and he spurned them. But even if Barta knew this and didn't go public, when he hires Altman or someone the fans are shaky on, they can't complain about Barta not going after Pearl. Remember, there were rumors that Pearl was interested. Just like there were rumors that the OK coach was interested when they hired Ferentz. Maybe Bowlsby knew the truth adn didn't want the OK coach to publically turn them down.
