Question Debate: Bruce Pearl - Great Coach or Flash in the Pan?

Debate: Bruce Pearl - Great Coach or Flash in the Pan?

We all know the Hawkeye faithful are drooling over the idea of Bruce Pearl actually having some interest in the run-down job in Iowa City but just how good of a fit would Pearl be?

Is Bruce Pearl a great coach with proven long-term success? That's debatable as he's jumped school to school after only a few years at each. He has success but nothing long-term and well tested. Is he a good recruiter, good coach or both? So far we can only say he's a good recruiter (umm did anybody see TN fall apart a few days ago).

Does he have a great personality that excites followers? Absolutely without question. BUT that doesn't mean he'd be able to excite the fair-weather fans that make up a big part of Iowa's Men's Basketball crowd if he doesn't take them to the promised land pretty quickly.

Anyways, just some food for thought to help spark a little debate about our little brother out East.

A program isn't built on one player and it doesn't succeed because of one player, thus a program won't fail if it doesn't get that one player.

I think he's a great coach. He's done it at Southern Indiana, UW-Milwaukee, and has brought instant success to TN and returns everybody from a Sweet 16 team this year. He can flat out get it done and I think he's a really likable guy.

I would have to agree, I just wanted to put it out there for debate. He's one of those guys that is obviously likable and gets it done.

Re: Debate: Bruce Pearl - Great Coach or Flash in the Pan?

Bruce Pearl is a good coach like Tom Davis was a good coach. The style they play is great if they are hitting shots and the other team is rattled or gets worn down. The fast paced run and gun press all the time style with players running in and out all the time works against teams with equal or worse talent, but against the better teams and good coaches it is hard to keep it up for the whole game.

If they did not like Tom Davis in Iowa City, I can not believe they would like Bruce Pearl. But your question was is Pearl a good coach, and I think he is.

I'd say he is a Great Coach...Success everywhere he has gone.

    http://utsports.cstv.com/sports/m-ba...l_bruce00.html

In 14 seasons as a head coach, Pearl has compiled a 339-92 career record. His teams have received postseason bids 13 times and have advanced to the Sweet 16 of NCAA Tournaments seven times. Five times he has been named league coach of the year and 13 times his teams have registered at least 20 wins, including a school record 26 at UW-Milwaukee in 2005.

Come on guys. Pearl would be the best canidate and everyone knows it. He's had success EVERYWHERE he has been. Didn't he even win a National Title at a DII school, Southern Indiana or something?

But to be honest guys, I would be more worried about it if a Big XII North team was looking at him.

Pearl would be a good get for Iowa nearly all the way around. I think it will be very tough for them to lure him away from Tennessee though.

He has done great at every school he has gone to. So I would say great coach. Needs to get over the edge though. Still not in the Roy Williams/Lute Olson area, but more like Bo Ryan/Billie Gelespi area.

Re: Debate: Bruce Pearl - Great Coach or Flash in the Pan?

Actually he spent about a decade at Southern Indiana in DII. He was somewhat "exiled" to DII after being involved in a recruiting scandal as an assistant with the hawks.

He is a good coach...but I also think he is "NCAA probation/sanctions waiting to happen"!

I cheer for two teams, Iowa State and whoever is playing the hawkeyes.

Why do you say this?? What has he done since he has been a head coach? The only negative rap on his resume is that he turned in recruiting violations by Illinois to the NCAA.

Re: Debate: Bruce Pearl - Great Coach or Flash in the Pan?

He is a good coach with a good system. The only question will be can he get the same athletes to Iowa that he now has at Tennessee. It is going to be really hard luring him away from Tennessee right now, look for them to give him an extension or rework his contract. He would be a good hire for the evil empire.

Didn't he leave some "luggage" in Iowa City? Some type of scandal concerning recruiting? Don't think I would want him at Iowa State. Maybe he's good enough for Iowa.

Tom Davis kind of warned Pearl off the Iowa job in today's Register.

Dude, he secretly recorded conversations with a high school kid after losing a recruiting battle over the kid to Illinois. In most states, recording someone without their knowledge of it is a felony. Additionally, Illinois was found to have done nothing wrong.

Dr. Tom had to can Bruce and he couldn't get a DI coaching gig for about a decade due to this. His "friends list" in the coaching business is not too long.

If someone is willing to do this kind of thing as an assistant (where the pressure is not as great)...what might he be willing to do as the head coach (where the pressure is great)?
