    I bet Chizik is shocked...

I for one wonder if Coach C isn't a little surprised at the lack of depth at just about every position at a D-1 school like Iowa State. I'm optimistic about the future, but look at what he faces
-patched together offensive line. Who knows what position these guys will end up playing and who will play.
-No reliable known running back. We have to count on a JC coming in or someone hurt most of the time.
-defensive backfield that was in complete disarray last season, especially the end of the year. JC's need to help a lot
-defensive line-among the smallest in the Big 12 if not THE smallest
-quarterback that must be taught to look at the entire field after running a zone offensive system that limited his options
Chizik needs some magic to pull all of this together. He's definately the man for the job, but he will need time and recruits.

I agree with about everything you got there. That is why we must take next season with a grain of salt. If we hit .500 I'll have to call it a small victory. Anything more that that will be sweet, but I'm not holding my breath.

Welcome to reality. I've been saying all along that 4-5 wins is my prediction yet I'd seen 6-9 win predictions by optimists. This team has holes and changing coaches is not going to make this team a top tier team overnight. It will take 2-3 years at least to even get back to thinking about Big 12 North title again I think.

    Funny thing is...
I still haven't heard a word on our kicking game.

What is this "kicking game" that you speak of?

Chizik gets a free pass this year and it will likely be the toughest year of the next 3.

I liked his comment on the first day of practice, we are going to find out what guys here are actually football players. I think he knows that the talent level isn't that great.

Re: I bet Chizik is shocked...

I really dont think he is surprised. First off he coached against us this past season, and has scouted our team from the moment he set foot on the campus to take over the job. You dont sign 5 linemen because you feel like it, he saw a weekness and confronted it the best he could.

Sure we got our weeknesses, but there is thankfully some experience just about everywhere except the OL. Sometimes experience pays off over pure talent.

RB there really isnt a lack of depth, just there isnt a clear front runner for the position at this point. We are all counting on Bass to make a huge splash, but Scalse or others could make a move. With the move of Jason Harris back to the RB position is does question the talent of the returners, but you cant rule them out until everyone reports for the new year this summer.

    Just my two cents

Don't forget Mac's first year - a rb known only for a kickoff return for a TD who played little in his freshman year burst onto the scene. Who will be this years overlooked talent and be the "Troy Davis"?

Re: I bet Chizik is shocked...

OK, someone will come out of the woodwork and be a contributer, maybe. It was a question that I asked last Fall. How, after 12 years, do you have to rebuild a unit? How, after 12 years, is there no depth? How, after 12 years, are there so few impact players on the team?

Even accepting the "we're just Iowa State, and we should be happy with Shreveport." argument, how badly has the program been managed when we're this thin? It isn't like Gene is our 4th coach in the past 12 years, we have had one person running things.

I know that he avoided responsibility with spin, and excuses, and people bought it, but wow. But thanks to all, I am finding it amusing reading these posts.
