Tax Return- Who do you use?

Getting ready to do my taxes and for the first time I'm not doing a 1040ez. Any suggestions on who to use?

I've used HRBlock.com for 3-4 years. It works pretty good and is easy.

Same here...much cheaper than going in and working with a person.

I do it myself with TurboTax. I've used the software for the last 10 years and it's great.

Re: Tax Return- Who do you use?

My dad. Why pay HR Block or someone else when he's got nothing better to do (apparently) than to read the entire booklet every year, nails (or comes close to nailing) the perfect return for him and mom every year, and is willing to do mine and my wife's free of charge?

Chuck Lidell: I paint my toenails with pink and black polish. Problem is, I get more paint on my toes and on the carpet than on my nails. Any advice?
Maria Sharapova: Don't you beat up other guys for a living? I don't know how to answer this.

Mine are fairly complicated and I've used a CPA for years. Pays to shop around however. I stay away from the firms and have an indpendent lady to mine.

I'm looking for a recommendation as well. I've used turbo tax for the last 5+ years but this year I purchased an investment property and have a couple of other non-ordinary items as well.

Re: Tax Return- Who do you use?

I've used Turbo Tax and thought I did well. I discussed the issue recently with my banker and he recommend that I use a CPA because if I were to get audited, the CPA has my back. On Turbo Tax I would be fighting the battle myself.

I've had investment properties, stock trading, IRA roll-overs, equipment depreciation, lump-sum distributions upon retirement, etc., you name it and TurboTax handled it with no problems. I just had to get the "premium" edition or whatever they call it.

Ignorant question, but if you aren't doing anything wrong, does it matter if you are audited?

Re: Tax Return- Who do you use?

I go in to a person at H & R Block. I can usually call in and get an appt with in an hour or two and they get me out of there in less than a half hour. I have numerous mutual funds, a mortgage, and some other investments and I would rather just have a pro do it for me. Usually costs around $150, but the time it saves me is worth it.

Now that MBB is back, do we still have to pretend that WBB matters?

chuckle, good question! Actually, TurboTax offers a service where they will take care of any audit, it's an additional small fee above purchasing the software.

Re: Tax Return- Who do you use?

If your return is simple, I recommend taxslayer.com. Took me about 30 minutes last year start to finish and my refunds were direct deposited in about three days.

With TurboTax you can sign up for some sort of audit defender for some additional money (maybe 30 bucks or something) and they will use their own lawyers to defend you if you get audited. I use turbotax but I'm sort of wishing I used the H&R block tax software. With TurboTax I had a question about tax law with my employee business expense deduction and I had to post it on one of their message boards and hope someone knew something about it. When they didn't I ended up having to go to irs.gov and research it for myself. H&R Block you can always call and talk to a real person.
