    Base molding question

We have cheap oak molding in our 5 year old home, what's this stuff composed of? We want to paint over it.

High density fiber board. I've never tried to paint that stuff but I'm guessing the glossy coating it usually has would make painting difficult without some sanding first.

    Re: Base molding question

My wife accidentally painted some of the same molding with Wally World's cheapest orange fluff interior latex. It now only covered well but I had one he!! of a time getting it off.

Got a closet with it in there? Pull some out and use it as a sample.

isuaggie is mostly likely correct - you'll probably have to sand it up a bit to bind to the coating.

    Re: Base molding question

You can paint just about anything... I think with most of those trims, the only difference between the cheaper stuff and the more expensive is whether or not you can stain it without it looking awful.

Like isuaggie said, you probably want to sand it first to give the paint something to grip on to... but that's probably not even necessary
