    Electric vehicles

The technology still is on the horizon to make electric vehicles competitive with the combustible engine.

From the Detroit News...For consumers to break even on their electric car purchase, one of the following things must happen:

There is a chemistry breakthrough that keeps material costs the same while creating a battery that can store twice as much energy, reducing the cost from $400 per kW/hr to $215.

A new $7,700 government incentive is offered.

Owners triple the number of miles they drive annually so the extra cost pays for itself.

Oil prices increase from $100 a barrel to $375 a barrel.

A 210 percent incremental gasoline tax is implemented.

    Re: Electric vehicles

On top of that I hate to break it to the tree huggers but that extra electricity that is needed to charge their cars it probably coming from a coal fired power plant. Not exactly environmentally friendly.

Yup. It would seem that electric cars using electricity coming from coal-fired power plants would be more destructive to the environment than diesel-powered cars.

Just as a heads up for people, the batteries in the hybrids on the market today, try to recycle one! Good luck! Those batteries are going to your local landfill.

When a hybrid can do a wicked brakestand like my '04 GTO did, I'll buy one. Until then, I'll continue to put smog into the atmosphere.

Nuclear is the answer. Zero carbon emissions. Relatively cheap to produce as well.

    Re: Electric vehicles

Not a tree hugger -- but Peak oil is a real issue.

I would rather pay anyone in the world -- other than Middle East for energy. The dollars we pay subsidize the extremists they cannot manage.

We had better hope there is electric cars soon as oil prices (and then gas) are headed to north of $125 a barrell again. That demand does not have anything to do with US consumption -- itis all driven by China's growth.

So keep your 8 barrelled gems and go broke.

Isn't our primary source of electric production coal? Until we get that resolved, I find it hard to believe that electric vehicles would save much of anything. If we can't use coal, and don't have another source, then we can't power all this new demand. My preference is nuclear, but there is a strong niche of resistance to that as well.
