Um, I'm actually going to be on today with Chris, Brent and Luke...shockingly enough.

Ken contacted me today stating they wanted a fan perspective for today's discussion.

Topic is the piece by Tom Witosky in last Sunday's Register - referring to "ISU's $135 million gamble". There will be plenty of other football talk from what I'm told.

While I have not been a big fan of M&M - I'll give it a shot.

Who's gonna turn down a chance to talk? lol

[You have to let them know that this is no different than taking a loan out to buy a house, would they consider that a gamble? Plus we didn't get approved to do it yet, we just got approved to look into doing it. Witosky is an a$$. Ask if they think that the kinnick renovations were a gamble, no one ever talked about that being a gamble. I would bet most hawk fans didn't know that tickets were going to increase once they made the renovations, i don't know if they would have wanted it to happen knowing the increase in tickets and parking around kinnick.

Make sure you get the good word out:) Ken had asked me to be on the radio with them but I have a prior engagement that prevents me from being able to accept the invitation. Make sure you send some good words about the DM Register:)

A program isn't built on one player and it doesn't succeed because of one player, thus a program won't fail if it doesn't get that one player.

I'd say it's a gamble when out of 175,000 living ISU alumns, only 6,000 belong to your national fan group. Basically, Pollard only has 6,000 people to work with to get donations. In order to get the rest of the money needed for his pet project, he'll have to beg, plead, and jack up ticket prices in order to fund the rest of his pet project.

Looks like the days of $10 tickets to see major college football are over with.

interesting ...but false...I among others I know belong only to the main ISU Alumni Association (50k strong) and plan on plunking many a' coins down for the changes. Yes...ticket prices may change...but Pollard has far more numbers to manipulate then what you have posted above.

Wasn't part of the plan to raise money to increase our members in the National Cyclone Club? I believe something was said about Texas A&M going from 6,000 to 60,000 by just getting people to sign up for the absolute lowest level. I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure this is in the works right now.

BTW why are you on a CYCLONE FANATIC website when you refer to OUR fanbase as "your national fan group"

    Thanks keep.

And I did post this on Cyclone Nation - but on the premium board under the thread Chris already started. Did not want to toot the horn too loud.

But, I think I'll post it over on the free board now.

My honest thoughts on the article.

While most of us don't like the word "gamble" being associated with the $135 million renovations...that's kinda what it is.

A person need not look any further than attendance to the Baylor game last year or some of the games later in 2002...and those are just a few examples.

While the game itself vs. Baylor was awful, no one knew that it would go that way. ISU had just came off their first loss, a tough overtime game at Nebraska. Still playing very well, yet the stands were not very full vs. Baylor - a Big 12 team.

Sure, it's Baylor, but fans need to start showing up to support ISU whether Iowa/Nebraska are in town or it's Baylor/Toledo/etc.

Many of you won't like this comparison...but look how many Hawk fans showed up to watch last year's Ball State game - one they knew they'd win by a very, very big margin.

I really don't necessarily view the article as all negative - yet one that has a realist point of view.

Plus, any team, ISU or otherwise, that is going to sink $135 million into facilities that is going to be almost 100% funded by the boosters/fans - is gambling to some extent.

I remember that game had a decent if not good crowd. Cyclones.com used to have historical stats on FB games, but that hasn't been added yet.. so I am unsuccessfully tring to find an attendance number.

Mainly because I really not too exCYted to hear that point of view on the radio, from a die-hard ISUFan.

EDIT: found it! Attendance: 45,992 (looks like a full crowd)! http://www.cstv.com/teams/m-footbl/scorebo...score_iast.html

we do show up for games, as ISU FB fans.... please don't make that your point on M&M.

Anytime you spend $135 million and are dependent on others completely outside your control to fund it and continue supporting it - there is risk involved. Not many like to hear it, yet it's a fact.

The coaches know it and I'm sure Pollard and his staff know it very well.

However, it has to be done. For ISU to take the next step, this is a very important part of it. I'm overly excited it's finally taking place, some of this should have been in the works a few years ago. It's upon us now and it's up to us, the fans, to come through.

Personally, I think we will. It may not look good early, but Jamie will find a way to get more fans interested and to open up their checkbooks. Nothing is guaranteed though, hence, why it's risky (aka a gamble).

Perhaps, gamble, wasn't the best term. Risk, as I've used, is better. People hear/read gamble and automatically think "'lost money" - ya know - Vegas and such. I don't think this is that risky. But regardless of who you root for, everyone aught to be able to see this carries a good amount of risk.

That, in all it's rambling, is what I'm trying to get at.

You don't really have enough information to make those statements. The $135 million includes debt service, which is paid off over a long life of the loans. If you aren't a NCC member, you should consider giving some money instead of doing nothing and complaining when things don't get better.

As for $10 tickets to see major college football games, how cheap are you? It's 2006. Do you think you could see an SEC game or an ACC game or just about any other major conference game for $10? The mentality of too many people out there is just like this. Demanding a better product, complaining and pointing fingers when it's not better, but not willing to take some responsibility for the end results either.
