    Street smart or Book smart

I know this thread is in the ISU MBB thread as, but this has no intention for our current team. Its just basketball related and at some point may have a correlation with our team at some time.

My question comes as this; would you take a very, very talented, possibly uncoachable street smart type player, or a rough around the edges, coachable, film studing book smart type player. The one player is probably already capable of playing at the NBA level, as where it might take all four years for the other player to possibly get to that kind of success.

I would always take a player wth a good attitude that I can coach. I dont care if he sits for two years, as long as he learns what I teach him.

I'm in agreement with you. I want coachable fundamental. Particularly with Greg as our coach. If we still had Wayne, I'd take the raw ready to play now kid.

Re: Street smart or Book smart

I'd take the coachable kid any day. Tinsley is the exception to the rule. Under the right system, with the right coach, most kids are coachable. The results may not always show on the floor though. Fans in general seem to be really hard on incoming freshman who don't produce right away though. I've heard a lot of talk in both football and basketball about players being a "bust" or "not a division I player", in only their first or second year.

If you have the right coach, everyone is coachable. We have the right coach... and the talent will be coming!

Exactly. I'll take guys like Tinsley over Paulson from Duke more times than not. Nearly everyone is coachable to a certain degree.

Re: Street smart or Book smart

the very talented, possibly uncoachable street smart type of players are the ones who make the plays that get you on sportscenter...the coachable, film-studying smart players are the ones who will know what to do and get you the W when the game is on the line, so personally I'd take the guy who is gonna get you the W.
