Used to really like following Paul and his adventures.....not so much anymore since he insulted ISU and Cyclone fans abroad recently in one of his ESPN blogs. Our institution gave him a free education and room and board and he said something about not having any loyalty to ISU. Screw that.

From a SportsNation chat with Paul on 2/24/06:

Michael (Wichita, KS): What's your take on Coach Morgan in Ames? Is he in control or are Stinson and Blalock running the asylum?

Paul Shirley: Actually, I have no idea. I'm not a particularly dedicated alumnus. I could probably write about this at some point, but I have almost no loyalty to Iowa State. I need to ruminate on this. It will result a much less beloved stature there, so I need to give it some thought before I alienate 12 people.

Don't confuse hope for a plan.

sorry if I'm bringing about old news regarding shirley, but I just watched Glory Road this week, and he plays a HAWKEYE in it. Gasp. That is disloyalty, I don't care how much he got paid for that.

I believe that banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than standing armies. If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issue of their currency, first by inflation, then by deflation, the banks and corporations that will grow up around the banks will deprive the people of all property until their children wake-up homeless on the continent their fathers conquered.

Anyone know what happened with Shirley in Ames? It seemed like he was always a fan favorite and most basketball alumni have a positive experience from what I've heard. I know a lot of athletes from much bigger urban areas stick around Ames after they graduate because they like Ames so much. Was it something with the athletic department? It's one thing if an alumnus gripes about how boring a town Ames is, but Shirley sounds pretty bitter.

Why don't you email him and ask. Go to the bottom of the ESPN article and click the link to Email Paul Shirley.

not quite following the 'insult" line of thought here...could this thread somehow be tied in with the Alex Thompson "witch burning" fracas from a week back? Paul doesn't insult ISU in his blog...just admits he does not follow the current programs...and no former athlete is obligated to do so.

And it's quite possible he didn't enjoy his stay here....and there is nothing wrong with that.

    in my humble opinion

Well, first of all, he tells us that there are only 12 ISU fans to alienate. Obviously it was a joke, but he's made other comments in his blogs regarding this but I'm not about to search through all of them so I can quote them for you.

And no, this has nothing to do with AT. Paul was a much better player than AT and didn't carry the same baggage.

I bet it is because i beat him in a game of pool one night at The Dean's List. I would like to say i ran the table, but it was close. Maybe he just can't get over that one night in a crappy little dance club. If that is the case, and what else would it be?!? Paul, I'm sorry. You win.

AT is yet an unknown....most likely to be cheered by Drew and yourself as soon as he knocks 10 down against Baylor.
It will result a much less beloved stature there, so I need to give it some thought before I alienate 12 people

He is referring to the limited number of "fans" he has...not the "total"

Over the last couple of weeks...I have found this thread along with a prior discusssion regarding Alex Thompson most interesting. A certain segment of the Cyclone fan base is quick to dismiss/besmirch any athlete that doesn't urinate cardinal and gold..or those who transfer from Hawk country to ISU.

Why stop there?...let us all empty our closets of machetes and pepper-spray and hunt down any former ISU student scoundral that dares not worship our cardinal feathered friend!

Take that evil nerdowell Steve Karlin of KCCI...a ISU graduate who is a devoted Hawk fan....I plan on hiding in his rose bushes and kicking him in the marble-sack as soon as he steps outside....thus begins the great cleansing of the benedict arnolds of our time!

ISUAlumn2002 and Drew...meet me under the Campinile at midnight with the following items...fanny-pack, night-vision goggles, cheetoes, and a bottle of Diet Squirt. The revolution begins.

    Long live Cy!!

LOL....its not that I expect them to **** cardinal and gold, but to have a bit of respect and loyalty to an institution that hands them free tuition, room and board....something that I would have done very bad things for when I was going to school there. That crap isn't cheap, and some of these guys (like Berryman, for instance) don't seem to understand that and **** all over the ISU "brand", if you will, by pulling stupid stunts.

Don't you think that some of these guys should have at least an iota of loyalty to the school that is providing so much for them? Not only the tuition and such, but the opportunity to play sports at the collegiate level and hone their skills for possible professional careers doing the same?
