Why would anyone want to coach anymore?

I've been pondering this question for quite sometime. With all the elligations/speculations (he said/she said). Why the hell would anyone want to coach in this day in age? You are expected to run a program, communicate with media, recruit, deal with athlete's crappy attitudes/ athlete's parent's crappy attitudes etc. Win a high number of games, make sure your kids make grades, etc. I just don't get why anyone would dedicate their time to the coaching profession these days?

There is big money in it, probably very rewarding, and the coaches love the game their teaching. There's no perfect job, positives and negatives in any job.

Mangino made over 1 million dollars per win this year. That's probably worth it.

It's great money, and for most, it's a job that you can look forward to going to.

So you guys are saying that money is more important than your personal health/stress?

Everyone is stressed. And as for personal health, just look at Urban Meyer.

Good point. I guess before going into it, you have to make the decision, is this money worth the stress? Some say yes, some say no.
Some coaches probably are very good that coach at a lower level, because there is not much stress, but you don't make much money.

hold on, who's saying that coaching football, which is what i'm assuming your thread is regarding, has an effect on an individuals health? just because urban meyer, a high profile coach, is taking time off because of health reasons does not suggest that being a college football coach can increase the liklihood of health issues. there are plenty of professions out there that are higher streessors then coaching football and offer less reward (pay far less). please show me something legitimate, other than your own opinion, that shows even a loose correlation between being a college football coach and health issues.

You're telling me that coaching in real life is way harder than on NCAA College Football?

    Dang I thought I had a future.

What job do you know of that thousands of people observe you and literally pick apart ever move you make. Plain and simple it doesn't happen, only in coaching are you constantly under the microscope for thousands of people to critique you.

I've known a lot of coaches, mainly at the high school level/college get out because of all the time/stress it puts on the family life. I'm not saying there's not stress in an everyday job like a banker, restraunt owner etc. But if you are comparing their stress level to a division 1 football coach, you have got to be kidding me!

I want to be a coach at some point in my life.. but not a head coach.. if i could be an assistant my whole career that would be fine with me

Iowa State: Anyone who's a true college basketball fan needs to see a game at Hilton Coliseum. Nice is in the DNA of Iowans and the fans here are particularly gracious -- even when the home team loses but gives a great effort, they are appreciative.

ESPN.com picked Hilton Coliseum as the "Hot Arena" in the Big 12...coaches in the league noted that, "regardless of talent, the Cyclones have a home court like no other."

President of the United States of America.
And that job doesn't even pay anything near what a BCS coach makes.

Top officials of publicly traded companies? Might not have as much widespread news coverage, but their shareholders watch them very closely as they have money on them.
