This! And looking at the schedule next season it should tell you just how far this team has to go to get back to a winning record in 2010.

That scoring offense is ugly but when you can't move the chains between the 20s that happens. It seemed everytime we actually got in the red zone we had success.

Red Zone Defense was key for ISU.

Who cares if you run or pass all over us, as long as you don't score, we WIN!!

Re: Inside the Numbers: The 2009 Iowa State Cyclones

The biggest thing that sticks out in my mind is the passing yardage. As Chris mentioned we all had visions of 400 yd games for AA but that was not the case. He seemed to never really get in a rythm with his receivers. There could be multiple reasons for that as it is a new system, young recievers and AA was injured for a few games.

Here's to the rushing Offense staying strong, the passing O getting better and the defense as a whole improving a BUNCH to upset a few of the B12 south opponents next year and win a B12 north tittle!

“It’s beyond pride. It’s a restored trust. There’s a confidence again, a passion that teeters on swagger. More than anything, (Iowa State head coach Paul Rhoads) has restored the Iowa State “it” factor, the steadfast belief that it is great to be a Cyclone...the man’s enthusiasm is genuine to the core...”

Scoring defense of 34th in the nation certainly helped.

Re: Inside the Numbers: The 2009 Iowa State Cyclones

I think defense was the heart and soul of the team and THE reason for the turn around. #1 Stat -- In 2008 we gave up 430 total points which worked out to be 35.83 points/game and In 2009 we gave up 284 total points which worked out to be 21.85 points a game. Not sure what our final ranking was in scoring defense but that is the only defensive number that truly counts. Great season. Go Cyclones!

I agree with Melvin. The most important stat (besides turnover margin) was our red zone defense. We are tied for second in the nation in red zone efficiency (with Alabama) allowing only 67% scores in the red zone.

No doubt the D was the reason and timely turnovers, esp. Neb. and Minny. I said before the season if we could pick up a few more 3rd down conversions and more important stop teams from converting on 3rd down, it would make a big difference.
