    Brackins' Draft Stock Falling

    Craig Brackins, F, Iowa State
No player made a bigger mistake than Brackins when he chose to return to college. Brackins was projected as a late lottery pick last season and came into this year ranked No. 14 on our Big Board. While his numbers are basically on par with what he did last season (lower points per game, but higher shooting percentages) -- the perception is that he's not as talented as scouts once thought. Some of that perception has to do with Iowa State's up-and-down play and the rest has to do with Brackins' age (22). Currently he's ranked No. 25 on our Big Board. I doubt he ever falls out of the first round -- but the lottery looks like a pretty big leap at this point.

To make it worse Wes Johnson is now a top 5 prospect according to the same article.

Not surprising. I'm glad he came back, but I wouldn't have. Still a lot of season left.

He will be fine. His biggest problem is he is a tweener. (meaning he isn't a guard and he is not a post player.)

    Re: Brackins' Draft Stock Falling

I think last year was such a weak draft class that he was higher than he should have been. Every thing I've read is this is a pretty strong class this year. Maybe we get lucky, maybe he falls enough that he sticks around until next season. I don't know how next years draft class is.

Hard to disagree with anything wrote. I still feel it was in his best interests to leave after last season, but our best interests that he stayed.

Hopefully this will just motivate CB to continue to improve as the season goes on. It's pretty easy to make people forget about early season struggles when you go nuts in conference/post-season play.

Having CB go in the NBA lottery would be a nice feather in the cap for the program when ISU is trying to recruit talented kids like he-who-shall-not-be-named.

He didn't really turn it on until conference play last year. And, we don't know where he would have been drafted last season. As much as those draft guys want to act like they have all the answers, they don't either.

It's funny because all of these publications last year said he wasn't a lottery pick and was a borderline first round pick.

    Re: Brackins' Draft Stock Falling

As you can probably tell from my post count, I typically am just a reader of this site and try to stay out of the coach bashing. However, privately I have questioned Mac's ability to coach and recruit in the Big XII. I know that I am opening up a can of worms here, but Mac somehow got us 2 NBA talents in the same recruiting class. This might be "luck" that any coach could fall into, but I want to say that has never happened before at Iowa State. We have had Fizer and Shirley in the same recruiting class, Tinsley was a JUCO, but Shirley wasn't drafted.

Just saying that I think I may have been a little hard on coach Mac. Sorry for opening up the coaching debate again...

I don't think anyone is knocking Coach McD's ability to recognize and recruit talent, he's had some trouble keeping it around for more than one year though...Where is that other NBA prospect at now btw?

If the season ended today I would be concerned. I bet he's rated higher right now then he was at this time last year so alot can happen. I hope he doesn't lose focus of the team concept when he keeps hearing that he's dropping.

If the season ended today, he should return for his senior year. He is not ready for the nightly grind of the NBA and has not shown that 'toughness' he will need. One more yr and he will be much closer. I'm not talking numbers.....just the physicality of it all.

That'd be a terrible idea. He can get used to the physicality of the NBA while in the NBA.

    Ding ding ding! Winner!

People: Just because you're drafted doesn't mean your development stops. You pretty much have a personal coach. If he stays after this year, it's because he loves Iowa State. As he's already said, if it was about the money, he'd already be gone.

    Re: Brackins' Draft Stock Falling

I think the key for him is staying in the first round. With the depth of big men in this year's draft I highly doubt he is a lottery pick but its still vital to stay in the first round.
