Coaching: Does the road to a national title go through Ames?

So on the pre-game show tonight Jimmy Johnson mentioned he lived in Iowa for a while. I was curious as to why he was here, so I looked it up and apparently according to his wikipedia page he was an assistant coach at ISU in the late 60's.

So, if Pete Carroll, Mack Brown, and Jimmy Johnson were all coaches here at one point, does that mean your best bet to make it as a coach is to coach the cyclones?

I'm not sure what else you could conclude from this

being a stepping stone isn't fun, we just have to find one that isn't looking for the next big thing.

Well here's the pattern so far:

    1. Assistant coach at iowa state
    2. Take a job at another school
    3. Become head coach
    4. Win national title

    Paul Rhoads:
    1. check
    2. check
    3. check
    4. ??

Head down to Cyclone Barber on Main St. and get a haircut and ask Ron about it. He'll tell you all about cutting Jimmy's hair as well as many of those other guys. Great stories and good haircut.

I'm not convinced that rhoads will stick around when better offers come his way, hope he proves me wrong.

I have seen the video, I have met him. I am very happy he is here but We have never been more than a stepping stone. I would be very happy if he changed that and was productive doing it.

I'll be happy if in 5 years he takes a top level job somewhere else. That would probably mean that he took us further than anyone else has.

CPR is going to make ISU a dynasty.
He will be the Tom Osborne of ISU.

I agree with your statement! Hope he brings great things to Iowa State...whatever he chooses to do AFTER bringing us success...I would wish him the best!
