Peach Bowl Preview - CR Gazette 12/31/77

Found this while searching the archives of the Cedar Rapids Gazette. Interesting comments about ISU fans cheering...and Iowa fans rooting against ISU! Somethings haven't changed...

Thought it was cool that I stumbled across this...funny...when I think about the Gazette I feel it hasn't changed much in its look...then I found the archives!

Interesting read ... thanks for posting! I was at that game. We sat in shirt sleeves while the NC-State fans wore down coats. We thought the 50 degree weather was a nice break from winter, while the Wolfpackers froze their tails off.

I stumbled into this article because that is the last date the archives have for the Gazette at this point (12-31-77). I would like to see what they wrote about the game...but that will have to come after they update the archives I guess...

We were there also. Here's a picture of part of the ISU crowd at the 1977 Peach Bowl. This was taken pretty early before the game as there were many more there by kick off. Had a great time.

    and Iowa
fans who will be rooting for them
    even though they secretly hope
they'll lose (you know who you are).
One line comment from the writer, that was it. Nothing to see here (re Iowa and ISU).

Great looking back on this. And very interesting about the party kits that were sold to those staying back and having game watch parties. Something like that today would go over like a ton of bricks.

I was at the game too. Drove a 26 foot Winnebago down with 8 or 9 other friends (the details are a little fuzzy). I remember one of the people with us was the twin sister of one of the ISU cheerleaders. Partied that night at the Peachtree Plaza hotel downtown, and a couple of the NC State players stopped by our little group and joined in. It was a good time!

True on the first comment...just don't know why it was even part of the column? Not necessary. I posted it because I found the "information" to be interesting...the fact that they listed the number of ISU alums in Linn County...funny.

We rented a 30 ft Coachmen in Columbia Mo and drove it down with another ISU couple. Had a great time.

The reference to the Hawkeye fans and to the number of ISU grads in Linn County reflected the fact that ISU was not familiar to most Gazette readers. Also, the football series had been renewed just a couple of months earlier and there had been a lot of ISU-Iowa talk for a year.

I can absolutely guarantee that the writer of that article was NOT a Hawkeye fan.

I think I know why you can state that so positively! Am I safe in assuming that the writer of the article was the "Lone" Cyclone fan at the Gazette in a sea of Hawks?

I think that is a safe assumption.

Indeed, that was the genesis of the name.

chuckle, how's retirement? I love it myself. I caught bits and pieces of conversation over on CR, that's how I knew who you were.
