Boise St. Legitimate Title Contender in 2010

Was watching the Fiesta Bowl with a friend last night and we were discussing Boise's chances in 2010. We looked into their roster and they return nearly all of their impact players.

We then looked what other schools returned and concluded that not only should Boise St. be pre-season ranked in the top five, but should also get a serious look at the National title, provided they go undefeated.

Alabama figures to be the prohibitive favorite to start the season #1, but after them it's kind of a crapshoot as to how the preseason top ten will shake out. Perennial schools like Florida, Texas, Oklahoma and to a certain degree, USC all will be strong, but will be nowhere near as talented as they were this year or a year earlier.

Ohio St., Oregon, LSU, Miami and even some fringe schools like Georgia and iowa all bring back a lot of talent as well and should be in or close to the preseason top 10.

The fact is, you can't deny Boise's talent, and with a lot of questions surrounding some of the powerhouses, next year might be their year.

This is exactly why none of the "big" schools will play them. They know Boise has a chance at the title and don't want to inadvertently help them. Plain and simple.

Re: Boise St. Legitimate Title Contender in 2010

I just honestly don't think they will ever get a shot. They went 14-0 this season, including a win over Pac 10 champ Oregon and the Fiest Bowl over a top 5 TCU team. I believe they went undefeated in the regular season last year as well only to lose their bowl game to TCU. So that makes them what, like 27-1 over the last two years? And this is just a couple years after their Fiesta win over OU, they didn't exactly come out of nowhere.

The BCS just isn't setup to give a mid-major team a shot at the title. If after everything BSU has done so far hasn't been enough to even get a crack at it, I don't know if anything ever will be.

They have Oregon State (in Boise) and Virgina Tech (in DC) on the schedule next year, which should help them out (if they win both). Plus Nevada and Fresno St should be decent.

Big school won't play Boise because they can't gain much since all they need is their conference and they know they could get beat. It is very unfair to teams like Boise and there is nothing they can do.

They definitely need everything to fall their way.

They need to go undefeated, have teams they beat have good seasons (like Oregon this year) AND they need there to be only 1 undefeated team from the major conferences. Then I think they may get a shot.

The problem for them is their conference schedule.

How many big schools actually play difficult Non-Conference Schedules? Other than Ohio State who has scheduled Texas and USC in the past, how many BCS schools actually try to schedule hard games in the non-con

Boise's problem is that they are not willing to give a little to get a lot. If they would sign a 2 for 1 deal where the BCS school got two home games and they only had to go to Boise once, then maybe someone would go for it.

A lot of other teams don't seem to have a problem with the 2 for 1 set-up...or is Boise now too good to be a part of the Non-BCS schools...Maybe Boise should try recruiting kids who could actually make it academically at some of the BCS schools instead of thriving on the academic casualties of the PAC-10.

Maybe they should just leave the Mountan West and become the Notre Dame of the West.

I thought I had read that Boise had offered some one-off away games and still couldn't get anyone to bite.

Re: Boise St. Legitimate Title Contender in 2010

i think they can do it next year. some teams in the top 5, most likely 4 of them will lose once... I dont see how boise isnt pre season top 5 next year... if they are not it is a complete joke. Boise, and TCU should both be top 10 next year. Bama, Iowa, Boise, TCU, Ohio State, and Maybe Nebraska, maybe... should all start in top 10, no lower then 15... i just dont see texas or ou going undefeated so someone is going to get a shot next year.

Because they were demanding a big paycheck as well. Which is ridiculous, because if a school is going to pay that amount, they might as well either A) Pay for an almost guaranteed win or B)play another BCS team, which wont be looked on as bad at the end of the season as losing to a non-bcs team

Fresno St. has no problem getting big non-con games. I don't buy that they can't get any big schools to play them.

Gotcha. Is this a case of straight-up greed on Boise's part or are the travel costs from Boise to a big-time, non Pac-10, team also hurting their ability to schedule a major program?
