    neil??

I have to admire his heart and must give him kuddos for his effort this past season but when all is said Neil needs to be moved from outside linebacker/defensive end. I'm not sure where you would move him to but I know week-in and week-out he was out-manned. He truly is not a Big 12 outside linebacker nor was he a threat. Again, I don't question is heart and effort, I just think we need to get a more physical person at that spot. Any thoughts??

    Re: neil??

Or he could be a redshirt sophmore playing his 3rd position in as many years and will end up being an absolute stud.

    Re: neil??

People say he isn't big 12 caliber and maybe he isn't right now. But I do like that he plays hard and I think there is a spot on the tea for someone with potential and who plays hard. He is young and can get a lot bigger. I have no problem with Neil. We aren't in a spot where we can be turning away defensive players.

I know you didn't say we need to bench him but he has come up a few times on this message board with people saying he isn't good enough. I disagree with that. It wasn't in the plans for him to be playing right now, with the parker injury he has had to. I think he will be a good (maybe great) player for us when he is a senior.

Yes. Neal was a D End, not an OLB.

He is more athletic than he looks (showed good speed last year at TE/FB as well). He is definitely undersized at DE. He plays hard and he was the 2nd best DE we had this year. He may be in the top 2 next year as well. I bet he will be at least 2nd string next year. Obviously if Nelson or any of the returners improves and is better than Neal than they would be an improvement and that would be good thing.

yet another thread whining about how an ISU Cyclone isn't good enough, when they pour their heart and soul onto the field everytime they play.

    Awesome.

One of the few things that came out of "The Chiz'" mouth was that recruiting is to recruit over every position and create competition. Experience is tough to replace let alone send to the bench but that's what spring ball and fall practices are for.

    Awesome.
Gotta agree. It's not as if Neal stole the position away because he has compromising pictures of coach. We suffered a big injury setback and Neal stepped in (early in his career) and did the best he could. Don't get the need to single him out, particularly after a bowl game win. I get the frustration with AA's play, but think some of the posts have gone way too far.

Since we can all seem to agree that we have an outstanding coach, let's just trust him to decide who should receive playing time in 2010? If it is Neal and AA, so be it, trust that they earned the position by being the best we have.

Although spelling his name wrong was a nice touch.

    Re: neil??

First of all, it is Patrick NEAL, not neil.

Second of all, I think it is so funny how some of you on here always bring this up on how he is too short, too slow, not big enough. Well, this guy who is too short, too slow, and not big enough beat out guys like Maggitt, Laing, etc. for that playing time and you never say anything about those guys. If you had a clue at all, you all would realize that Patrick played well this year, will get a lot of playing time next year and be a big part of this team throughout the rest of his career. Stop bashing Patrick Neal PLEASE. He's done nothing, but step up for his team and he is a good player.

    Re: neil??

Neal was severely undersized and not a detriment in the bowl game.

    Nuff said.

    Re: neil??

if he wasn't good enough he wouldn't have played. fact is he is better than the man behind him or he wouldn't have seen the field.

it is important to try and out recruit every position on the team though regardless of how good or bad a player is. when that happens there is competition and every player gets better. hopefully that does happen and if neal starts he starts, and if he doesn't he doesn't

    Re: neil??

I don't know if Neal is a lot better than the guys behind him, but I do know that ISU's defensive line was horrible this year and it will greatly miss Chris Lyle next year. Lyle was far and away the best player on the line this year.

FYI - ISU is ranked 111th in the nation in sacks with only 16 on the year. That's horrible when you consider how many pass-happy teams we played this season. Also, five of our 16 sacks came from ISU's linebackers and defensive backs.

    http://web1.ncaa.org/mfb/natlRank.js...&div=IA&dest=O

ISU's linebackers helped ISU overcome a WEAK defensive line this past season. Next season I'm hoping the defensive line can at least hold its own as we will greatly miss Smith, Garrin and Raven.

I don't mind seeing him put on 20lbs and staying at DE.

I'd like to see some new personnel in there. Neal's 27 tackles and one sack in 13 games played (including 9 starts) isn't going to cut it next season.

An extra 20 pounds won't necessarily translate into success. Even an undersized Jason Berryman had 110 tackles and 3 sacks as a true freshman in 2003.

Do you have a magic wand?
Given Neal does not have Berryman's quicks, the marginal benefit of Neal bulking-up should be better than Berryman.

True. Maybe he can gain enough weight to take Frere's spot on the inside.
