Recruiting: what do we have left?

I've heard some reports claiming that Rhoads got one commitment before leaving Tempe and Rhoads himself stating that we have one more left to give... and I've heard other reports that Rhoads got one commitment before leaving Tempe and another one since getting back?

We all know about Shontrelle Johnson, which is a good pick up, but is there another one?

Sounds to me like at the most we have 2 left to give, but maybe only one? We MUST get another DL of some kind IMO... or two if possible? I'd love to get both Bush and Kirksey... that would be the ultimate IMO. A DT and a DE both. Is that still a possibility?

RB position does seem to be a bit of a log jam though. ARob (SR), Bo (JR), Beau (SO), White (RsFR), Hollis (FR), and Shontrelle Johnson (FR). Are 6 scholarship RBs pretty normal these days? Or will we see a switch of positions by someone? Maybe Hollis or Beau to LB? Or Hollis to WR?

From everything I've heard, James White could be a VERY good RB for us. That would be nice, if true. I think I'd really like to see Bo Williams try LB, he looks the part. But I don't know if Bo wants to do that?

Anyway... what insights does anyone have regarding what commits we might end up seeing before it's all said and done? Give me Kirksey and Bush... it would be the best Christmas gift I got this year!!

My bet is some Defensive players will be our last pick ups.

On the running back log jam, my bet is a few we'll be converted to defensive positions.

Yes you can.... especially if it takes away from how many DE's and DT's you can get.

As of right now, we have one DE commit in the JUCO Rony Nelson who should contribute hopefully, and only one DT in Jensen who is a two star guy that is somewhat of a project.

You cannot win football games without stopping the run and getting pressure on opposing QB's. IMO you cannot have too many big guys...on both offense and defensive lines. That is where games are won and lost.

We need Kirksey and another DE IMO. We can get all the RBs, WRs, and ATHs we want to, but we really lack the size on the defensive line right now. Patrick Neal gives 120%, but he's not a Big 12 DE.... period.

Re: Recruiting: what do we have left?

my #1 target would be kirksey. big DT with a number of solid offers. DT seems to be the most difficult to recruit. we don't seem to have an abundance of talent or depth at that position right now. serviceable? yes, but as we can see by our sack numbers we certainly need an upgrade and we are low on numbers both on DT and DE in this class. an upgrade in talent at these positions will really help this team as a whole on defense. our inability to get much pressure on opposing QB's really hurt us this year.

if dartwan bush opens things up, he would be my #2 pick

I think Kirksey is the target and he completes this class.

I agree with this. One will be a RS this season, look at a place like Iowa. They had multiple injuries at the RB spot, does not happen much but it can happen. You need to have a minimum of 4 available for the season. (my personal thought) Maybe one can get some PT on special teams as a returner or something.

Worse comes to worse one might be able to become a DB or LB depending on size.

Regarding the original post, we need more DL. I would hope a JUCO DT.

Re: Recruiting: what do we have left?

lack of quality depth at rb was the difference between a special 2005 and the season that we had. Had any quality depth been behind Hicks (or beat him out) we play in a bigger bowl and for the Big 12 title.

We had Coleman, Scales, and Harris (position switch) and it cost us dearly.

Won't Iowa have 8 running backs on scholarship next season?

Re: Recruiting: what do we have left?

I think with Johnson in the fold we will see Hollis move to wr or db. He seems to be an athlete who could play multiple positions. My bet is wr.

As for what's left I would love to see kirksey first and then if bush opens it back up, him next. After that I'd like to see ace sanders if we take that many, although if Hollis gets switched I don't see that as a need anymore.

Re: Recruiting: what do we have left?

I'd like to see Kirksey first, Miles second. Bush I don't know that we have much of a shot. If he opens it back up, I expect him to go to Baylor. If they can't get any of those three, I hope for a JUCO DL/DE.

Re: Recruiting: what do we have left?

I thought it was posted earlier that the 4 Juco's could be added to last year's class. 3 of them at least. If that is the case, we still have room for a couple more recruits at least. And there is the possibility of a guy like Brandon Jenson being a greyshirt, you never know. I actually think we will sign about 3 more.

The speculation of 3 or 4 count backs has always come from posters who really don't know how the 25 initials were allocated the past 2 years. PR has always talked about having 1 available count back slot so stay with that until told differently. You can't speculate based on rivals listings or even roster lists.

A juco DT is the last thing we need. Ideally, we need a high school DE. The staff has said it is satisfied with the interior D-line guys already on the team. But if a guy like Kirksey falls into your lap, you need to take him regardless of other needs. Same thing we Shontrelle Johnson. You just don't say no to someone like that even if getting another player at that position is not a priority.
