Are you suprised Tiller wasn't on the field?

After how much MarQues Gray was on the field I started to wonder why Tiller was not. Whether it be QB, WR, or a wildcat formation, I was wondering if we'd put him in the game. It was the last game of the year, so I felt like they might consider it.
I'm not trying to be critical maybe just a little surprised because of how much I saw Gray on the field.

Perhaps the difference is in how we use our quarterbacks. With the hard running that AA does, it makes him more likely to be injured, and need his back up to come in.

Re: Are you suprised Tiller wasn't on the field?

Minnesota has used Gray in all those formations throughout the year. The bowl game wasn't a change of scheme for them.
I don't think Gray will end up being the QB after Weber leaves anyway, unless he makes some serious progress in his throwing ability. I think he played almost half the season without attempting a pass. He will be a full time receiver when they don't have to rely on him as a backup QB.

They used Gray because he is their absolute best athlete on offense. Jerome Tiller is not our best athlete on offense.

Now that MBB is back, do we still have to pretend that WBB matters?

Re: Are you suprised Tiller wasn't on the field?

I'm guessing that Gray has better hands than Tiller does. Just like when we had Phillip Bates, he was too good of an athlete to have on the sidelines, so he played WR. Now, I have no idea whether Tiller has stone hands or could be the next Austin Flynn, but just something that could be why he isn't playing.

Re: Are you suprised Tiller wasn't on the field?

It seems to me Gray brings a different dimension to MN than Weber. Using him can create problems for defense. Tiller is more similar in style to AA. Oposing defense will look/play the same if we switch. Unless AAA is playing poor, ther eis no reason to put in Tiller. IMHO

Re: Are you suprised Tiller wasn't on the field?

Some good points guys. If you think that Tiller might not have that great of hands to be a WR then wouldn't it be interesting to throw him in as an option in the backfield then?

No because he can't take a hits like our other backs or AA can.

Re: Are you suprised Tiller wasn't on the field?

I wasn't surprised. Especially since everyone wants to compare him to Gray. AA already gives us that dimension. Granted, he had his passing issues last night, but with him at QB, almost every snap is like the wildcat. AA is probably as good of a hard nosed runner that you'll ever find at that position.

Tiller, I wouldn't be surprised if they are still saving him to be QB. Maybe it sucks not to see the field, but all in all, if you are grooming him for QB, then you have him play QB. Anytime he spends working on routes or how to run out the backfield is time spent away from being a QB.

I do feel bad for him though. Without what he did at Nebraska, we wouldn't have been in this game. Too bad we couldn't have opened the score up a bit for him to get a few snaps.

I just hope he doesn't transfer like bates. He looks pretty good.

No, because AA is a better runner than Tiller.

I understand that but what about the other positions? Flynn did alright as a slot receiver.

I think spring ball will decide if Tiller is our QB in 2011 or a very productive H-back

Not surprised in the least considering Tiller only played one or two snaps in a regular season game when Arnaud wasn't out with an injury and/or it wasn't mop-up time. I forget which game, but Arnaud got dinged and was out for one or two plays until the cobwebs cleared, then went right back in. That's the only time Tiller played meaningful snaps in a game that Arnaud started.
