    Alfords Replacement

On a half way serious note what type a coach do you think Iowa will go after? A young up and comer or a proven name from a prestige school?

They've got some things going for them. Carver Hawkeye will hold a lot of people and the coffers are certainly full at that athletic department so they can afford to pay someone well. It's a Big 10 school, so a highly desirable "Power Conference" job. I'm not sure what coaches are in the market right now?

I'm just glad it's them and not us. They have to worry about getting a good coach and the recruiting fall out. It's doubtful a Bob Huggins type can come in with 5 recruits in his back pocket(that's an intresting read by the way.)

I've heard the Southern Illinois head coach and Dana Altman from Creighton, as well as Lon Krueger from UNLV thrown out so far...

    Re: Alfords Replacement

See, I don't think that the job is held in the esteem, nationally, that they think it is. The story that will come out with Alford's departure will be that he was essentially forced out by a demanding fanbase. I admire that they actually had the "arrogance" to not accept an inferior product, and he got a suggestion that if something came along he needed to strongly consider it.

Now, for what I think they will do...I think that the mid major route is most likely (Marshall, Lowrey, Altman). But, it also wouldn't surprise me if they opened up the checkbook, and hired a "name."

even though the iowa gig is a big conference team, I cant see them leaving their respective programs.

Krueger has been stating he enjoys UNLV since he has his family there and he has things going for them. I believe if Krueger does leave, it will be for a bigger and better gig than Iowa.

SIU's coach is an alum of SIU and he has his team in the national spotlight (ranked and alive in the tourney). I can't see why he would leave that, unless IU threw a lot of money his way.

Altman I could see being lured out of Creighton, but he has a solid program and an amazing fan base. That's hard to give up, again unless they throw alot of money at him.

If they want anyone up and coming why not in house and go after the asst. coach? He had his name in the hunt for various openings. itll be interesting to see what they actually do.

    .
I agreed with all your points, but G-Mac was an alum of UNI and he left them. Now UNI wasn't on as big of a scale as SIU is now, but it's still kind of the same thing.

    Re: Alfords Replacement

Dana Altman's name has come up. Lowery would be a great catch. Couple of great gal coaches just retired. WM would not even have to sell his house. He could commute. May6be they can hire a high school coach. Actually, I think they will hire an academy coach so they can recruit which was the weak point.

However, being Iowa, they will probably say Bill Self, Rick Pittino and Roy Smith are interested. Tubby Smith will probably be fired from Kentucky and then he can take the Iowa job.

    Re: Alfords Replacement

I heard on the radio tonight that some of Alford's "friends" said that his main interest was finding a school that was "passionate" about basketball instead of being football first. How's that taste, Hawkeye fans? You just lost your coach to a midmajor, and on the way out, he's saying you're not passionate. Might want to drop that line into your want ads for your next coach. That should help.

Ok, back to the topic, my nominee is the Anti-Alford, Jeff Van Gundy
