ehhhhhh... I'm kind of indifferent. He fills a need though I guess.

It was either him, Ankiel, or Podzidnick. Take your pick

    Re: Cubs sign Marlon Byrd

I like the fact they are going for Jason Frasor

Frasor's four-seam fastball can reach 96 mph. He throws a straight four-seam curveball, starting at near-eye level, on a downward trajectory.
After developing an effective change-up during the offseason, Frasor began 2009 with a 4–0 record through early May, without allowing an earned run. This was one of the best marks in all of Major League baseball, and helped the Blue Jays hold first place in the American League through the 2009 season's first 26 games.

apparently you do not know much about marlon byrd. he is the ideal ball player. he plays the game right. he is a hustler and a heck of a defensive outfielder. with the power he showed in 09 he went from an average outfielder to way above average...just below top tier in my opinion. the rangers wanted to keep him horribly, just could not afford him.

    Re: Cubs sign Marlon Byrd

byrd's signing was a long time coming. of all available centerfielders, he was probably the most consistent over the past several seasons. and with the cubs taking the rangers' hitting coach, it was a good idea to bring byrd into the fray. the financials of the signing are really good, as well. i wonder what this means to the overall payroll, though. depending on how much cash we got from seattle for silva, we may have broke even financially. if that's the case, we can sign a legit relief pitcher and not increase the payroll substantially, which ricketts has said is his goal.
and a second point, i called this signing 2 months ago. you're welcome!

The only reason he has ever had decent numbers is because he played in arlington.

Not sure I like that its a 3 year contract. Can't imagine that anyone else out there was offering more than 1 year. Hendry always seems to reach with contracts for marginal players like this. Aaron Miles got a 2 year deal and look how well that turned out. The headcase Bradley 3 years is another example.

Why do the Cubs always sign players coming off a career year? Why cant they develop someone and lose them because they cant afford to pay them because they had a career year!?

ricketts has said that he plans on developing the farm system to the point where they can actually develop worthwhile bigleaguers. they have a couple infielders that they think are only a year or two away. as for the outfield, they really don't have anyone in the farm that can step up in the next 3 years. not to mention that the guys they have brought up in the past 5 years or so to fill outfield positions, have become huge busts (patterson brothers, anyone?). give it a couple seasons, and the cubs will have those outstanding 1st, 2nd year guys that will contribute as much as those tiered guys do on other teams.

That's the thing I hate about this deal. In 2010, Byrd will be an asset. In 2012, he'll be yet another contractual dead weight.

    Re: Cubs sign Marlon Byrd

Byrd's contract is a backloaded 3yr/$15M deal. He'll be paid $3M, $5.5M, and $6.5M. That third year could be ugly considering he'll be 36-years-old by the end of it.
