    Alternate routes in NM/AZ

I am in a group of 2 vehicles leaving tonight from Colorado, driving all night to get to Tempe. We're weighing the options of taking a route different than the I-25, I-40, I-17 route. First, northeastern AZ and northwestern NM have a possibility for snow tonight. We can definitely handle the snow, but if we can avoid it by taking another route it would be nice. We have 2 vehicles, so less worry about a breakdown in the middle of nowhere. We will be driving in the middle of the night, so there would be some concern of hitting deer, cacti, etc.

I've seen some talk about turning off of the interstate at Holbrook, AZ, and taking 377/87. I'm guessing this would take about the same as going through Flagstaff.

I've also considered taking US 60, probably getting off I-40 just before Grants, NM, and taking 60 all the rest of the way.

Anyone have comments on these routes?

Arizona 89A north of sedona. Some very fun hairpin turns up on a mountain. Drove these in a 15 passenger van a couple years ago, very fun.

the Holbrook/Payson route is not bad. I drove it just after a snowstorm and it was manageable. The climb up the mountains is fine, but the descent can get a little hairy as it is a 4 lane hwy without a divider most of the way and I think you drop almost 12,000 ft

I hate it when those damn cacti come out on the highway. They always make a point of sticking you somehow.

I drove the Holbrook route this afternoon. Went through a very heavy snowstorm most of the way. Put your best drivers on it and you should be okay. Do not take this route if you are "in a hurry"- it is FASTER than the interstates through Flagstaff, but you can't be in a rush. There's a whole ton of no-passing 2-lane. There's also not many places to stop, but that shouldn't be a problem; it's less than 3 hours from Holbrook to Tempe.

I also remember a game with Kansas when Cy (wore a huge suit then) went out to center field, squatted, and "pooped" a couple of chickens that had been dyed blue then chased them around.
