    Minnesota gives Brewster contract extension

I think this is good news for us regarding the Insight Bowl. It should make the Minnesota fan base even more apathetic about their football program, if that's possible.

Minnesota to offer Tim Brewster contract extension - NCAA Football - SI.com

Gene Smith, 1993-2000. 7 years, 6 NCAA's, 1 bowl game. Revenue sports postseason participation 50%. Good.
    Bruce Vandevelde, 2000-20005. 5 years, 4 bowl games, 2 NCAA's, 2 NIT's. Postseason participation 80%. Better.
    Jamie Pollard, 2005-. 4 years. 1 bowl game, 0 NCAA's, 0 NIT's. Postseason participation: 13%. The next big step.

My ignore list: splitidentity, tarheelhawk, superdorf, clones_jer. That is all.

    Good News.

Reminds me of Callahan & Nebraska.

Funny that you think its good for us (and bad for them) that they are extending a coach that is creating fanbase apathy, considering its *exactly* why we had to fire mccarney, and we all know your feelings on jamie doing that.

Re: Minnesota gives Brewster contract extension

I doubt the buyout changes as Brewster has NO bargaining power. It's something like a $500,000 buyout. Maturi has been hedging his bets. A blowout win by Iowa State, and Brewster could still be gone.

Re: Minnesota gives Brewster contract extension

The last coach they gave an extension to was fired about a year into his new contract.

Re: Minnesota gives Brewster contract extension

I just don't understand why these contract extensions are so important to recruiting. Countless times guys are fired (or leave) while under contract. These things are not really all that binding with the various buy-out options.

    Short-term vs. long-term thinking.

If Minnesota thinks short term they would fire Brewster and hire someone else who would probably be worse, just to create short-term false hope and excitement. This is what Pollard did when he replaced McCarney with Chizik, and it's what Minnesota did when they replaced Glen Mason with Brewster. Both programs got the same thing -- in the short term they got an infusion of excitement, even though it was gone before the end of the first season. In the long term they spent more money to make the program worse. The Minnesota AD is showing that he learned from his mistake by preaching the value of stability. Good for them in the long run, but it won't give them an infusion of excitement to energize their fans this week.

When you are recruiting the type of idiot MN has been bringing in since Brewster arrived, it's easy to hoodwink them into comitting with this scenario. Most are too poorly read to understand the same game was played with Mason, and he was canned less than one year after receiving an extension. Nothing has been signed yet in MN...they are just trying to stem the tide of de-commits [5].

i don't think we fired dmac because of fanbase apathy. i think it is because we peaked and were on the backslide. he didn't capitalize on the success we had, and also failed to win the north twice when it was handed to us on a silver platter. things were going downhill fast and everyone knew it. we couldn't sustain success in a terrible north division

I agree with the parallels between the DMac and Mason moves.

However, Minnesota is still suffering from it while it appears ISU is back on the upswing.

I don't agree at all that keeping a mediocre coach for the sole purpose of maintaining stability is the right answer either.
