Areas of improvement for our BB team

I would like to hear if anyone else agrees with me or has other thoughts. This is intended to show where we can improve.

I will start with the coach. Can I see a little sense urgency, excitement, toughness, a strive for perfection. Although a team will never be perfect, it should be something you work on to get the team as close as perfect as you can. If we miss 20 free throws in a game or if a team gets 3 offense of rebounds in a row. Maybe someone needs to yanked just to make a point to our player why are you on the floor.
I have been a little disappointed in Hamilton, i was expecting more than 2.6 rebounds a game from him. Especially with his big frame, attention being drawn to Brackins and Gilstrap. He should be sensing where the ball is going to come off and show some tenacity to get that board.

Garrett still needs to work on that outside shot, it is better then last year. Teams much like UNI did will drop players down on Brackins and will force Garrett to prove he can make that outside shot.

Brackins has to show he can dominate down low. Control the paint, let everyone know that it is automatic from 5ft in, or you will have to foul me.

A stat I remember hearing last year, on Staiger is that he attempted 8 free throws for the year. He has shot well from 3-point land. I would like to see him use a pump fake and an agressive move free himself up for a better shot or drive to get to the line more.

While we have room to improve in sooo many areas...

I sure hope we dont see more 3s from DG or Lucca trying to drive the ball.

I would like to see Staiger come off more screens. He seems more effective as a catch and shooter.

Re: Areas of improvement for our BB team

consistency is the biggest weakness right now I think. Even Brackins needs to work on this, we've seen guys have a big game then follow it up with a clunker the next game. Gilstrap has improved with his consistency lately I think but Staiger is either on or completely off on a given night, DG has always been streaky, Brackins scoring has been a roller coaster, and you never know if Dendy or Christopherson is going to be on in a given night. Not saying all these players have to have their best game statistically every night but seems like we never have 1 or 2 of them clicking every game, its always an adventure of who is going to show up and dazzle us on a given night.

I think defensively we've been fairly consistent, we bend but don't break and have shown we can be effective with pressure too. Our offense seems to go in streaks. We have times we have the gas pedal to the floor and look great then they let up and allow teams to hang around instead of just smelling blood in the water and going for the kill earlier.

Free throw shooting. Leadership from the point. CC will be that but maybe not thisyear. Defense.

Toughness, leadership PERIOD especially against adversity, rebounding (see toughness) and movement without the ball.

Free throw shooting will be the deciding factor in at least 6 games the rest of this season.

    -FREE THROWS

    -FREE THROWS

    -Mental toughness

Right now these guys lack much of an ability in either arena. Free throws have cost us the UNI and NW games thus far, and I think at this point, they will cost us an NCAA tournament bid. Free throws are SO huge in close games.

Mental toughness is killing these guys too. Free throws are somewhat tied to it. There isn't a single player on this team I can imagine making a clutch play. In the past there were guys like Stinson, who you KNEW if he got the ball with the game on the line, that we could win (see 2005 in Phog). There isn't anyone on this team who plays that way, and I think it's definitely coachable. This lack of mental toughness, and continually losing close games under McDermott is, IMO, coupled with free throws as the single biggest problem with the last 4 years of Cyclone basketball. If McDermott can fix these two glaring problems, he can turn it around.

I agree - I don't think we have that clutch, go-to guy that you need to rely upon at the end of close games. I want to see some fire out of the coach in the New Year as well.

I may sound crazy but with the game on the line right now I think Christopherson is the guy I want handling the ball and trying to create a shot. He has a knack for getting fouled and seems to have that kind of confidence that he is going to find a shot regardless. Ironically he's our top FT% too at .833, 2nd behind Brackins in 3pt% at .571 and tops in FG% (throwing out the guys ahead of him due to lesser number of FG attempts) at .571 too.

Re: Areas of improvement for our BB team

I think that the team has gotten quite a bit better from last year, but just not enough better. FT shooting and rebounding are real problems right now. Petey got a lot of tough rebounds for us last year and Gilstrap is the only one I see who rebounds with that intensity. Brackins' rebounding has fallen off a little and Ham hasn't improved like I thought he would. DG has improved a ton, but he will never be an outside shooter, so he's always a liability in that regard.

My hope is that Gilstrap, Dendy, Christopherson and Colvin continue to improve and raise the level of the entire team. I'd also like to see Boozer get some more minutes. I wish that Lucca would work with Jake Sullivan a little on the shot fake-dribble-pull up. JS was lethal with that and Lucca should be able to add that to his game. For this team to win enough to make the dance, Gilstrap has to be on Brackins' level if not higher and Dendy has to develop a post game. Otherwise, the team is too easy to defend.
