anyone have an answer on the schollie situation?

there has been several posts on here in recent weeks regarding how many players we will sign. most agree that cpr said he would like to sign 26 in this class. by that then, do we only have 2 schollies left?

numerous posters are saying that at least 1 of the 4 early signees can be banked toward last years class, and others say as many as all 4. this would then give us 3-6 schollies remaining.

instead of sifting through the thousands of football related posts, i am creating this thread to see if anyone has a difinitive answer as to how many more kids we are allowed to sign. i'm hoping for 6 more-we have a lot of high interest from some real players it looks like.

I think the consensus is 26-28 but not sure if anyone knows with 100% certainty. I also heard the 26 number so until I hear CPR say something different, I'm sticking to that I guess.

Absolutely no way it's 6. You can only count 3 backwards.

Re: anyone have an answer on the schollie situation?

looks like they have absorbed 4 of the newbies on last years schollies.it looks like rhoads has six schollies available yet for 2010 signing in february. i still think that they will recruit another qb,some defensive linemen, another wide receiver, and some more dbs.

Re: anyone have an answer on the schollie situation?

Rhoads has said 26-28, but he has also said 26.

You can count mid-year JUCO transfers against the last year's class as long as you have spots for them. No more than 25 can count against a single year. We signed 26 last year. That's counting Earl Brooks who is on scholarship, but not Jon Watts who was a walk-on. It's also counting grayshirt Ethan Tuftee against last year, but either Spears or Sims against 2008.

Of those 26 signed last year, four never showed up. Unless I'm missing something, that means we could count three of the mid-year JUCO transfers against last years class, which would allow us to sign 28 this year.

So why has Rhoads said 26? I think it has to do with the 85 scholarship limit. Assuming Parker is back next year and nobody transfers, we have 59 scholarship players returning. Add 26 to that and you get 85.

I find it unlikely, though, that no one will transfer. We know Schwartz is considering it, and I'm sure a couple more will as well. If two players transfer, that would allow us to sign 28 if my math is right. It's very possible that my math and/or knowledge of the rules is a little off, but this is the best explanation I can come up with.

If it helps you any, I wouldn't be terribly surprised to see one or more players from among the current commits turn out to be a grayshirt.

    Paul Rhoads' players never quit.
    (They just disappear offseason)

Who is this? I haven't heard of a qb from south dakota.

my thoughts on the scholorship situation is this. It seems to me that the staff is still in on a lot of recruits at many different positions. If they were intensively recruiting players for one or two positions I would say we probably would only take 26. However, they are recruiting players at the DT, DE, QB, RB, WR, and DB positions which makes me think that they are thinking about taking more than 26.

Then again, they could be thinking that they have already addressed their needs and are just trying to get the last two best players possible.

Any chance if we get a few "big" names late, that we drop any lower rated earlier commits and ask to part ways?

Wrong! you can count 5 backward and 5 forward (grayshirts) Nebraska did that several years ago.

Sorry, but IcSyU has it right. Not even Nebraska would get away with violating the NCAA limit of 3.

This is the best breakdown of the situation and explains hy he heard 26-28. The variance depends on transfers. also, the staff might be willing to sign a guy like Golden who may not quallify academically. If he does, figure it out in the end or greyshirt someone. If he doesn't nor harm no foul
