    Help me out!

I recently got accepted for a job in Urbandale, so I'll be moving back to Iowa after a 3 year absence. I was just wondering where people would recommend living that has affordable housing and good neighborhoods around the Des Moines area. I am from a small town and don't know all the good parts of Des Moines.

    Re: Help me out!

From what I hear, the north and west suburbs are nicer but a little more expensive. The only really important thing to consider is the time it takes to get to JTS to maximize tailgating time:)

Urbandale is a very nice community to live in as are many of the communities on the west side of Des Moines. West Des Moines, Urbandale, Johnston, Waukee are all very similar.

    Re: Help me out!

I work downtown and live in Ankeny. Close enough to everything, yet far enough away. Although, Ankeny is rapidly growing.

If you want small town appeal, close to Urbandale, head up to Grimes.

We are probably going to rent for a few months, but ultimately are looking for a nice affordable house to purchase in the area.

How is Grimes? It seems there was nothing there a few years ago, but not it sure has expanded.

Not sure about the housing market, but you are right, it is growing also. I would bet its cheaper than Urbandale and Johnston.

If you like small towns, and don't mind the drive, you could go a bit north of Urbandale - places like Slater, Huxley, Granger, and my hometown of Madrid are all great places that would be close enough for a 20/25 minute commute at worst. Great small towns close enough to Ames and DesMoines to not be a painful drive, and you may be able to get more house for your $.

    Re: Help me out!

Grimes is nice, and would give you more of a small town feel, yet is still close to Urbandale.

    Re: Help me out!

I'm in Altoona I love it. We're in the old part of town, so it feels more like the neighborhoods I remember when I was growing up. It's still close to Des Moines, but has most every convenience that you need.
There are new sections that cookie cutter homes. That's why I like the older part of town. Seems to have a little more character.

    Re: Help me out!

I would love to live in Ames, but I don't want to drive that far. I am leaning towards grimes or the granger area. Madrid would be a maybe.

Grimes is growing like crazy, but most of the new homes are in your standard yuppie-ville housing developments. When I was in grade school, we used to whip Grimes in little-league - they barely had enough for a full team. Fast forward 18 years or so, and they're rapidly approaching the size of Urbandale or Johnston.

I've got a friend that lives there and he's said the property taxes have jumped up a bunch over the last 5 years. They've been stable for the last couple years , but he's said they more than doubled what they were 8 years ago.

    Re: Help me out!

I would recommend Grimes (especially since I live/work here!) If you're looking for even more of a small town feel not far from Des Moines look into Dallas Center, it's just 10 miles west of Grimes on Hwy 44 and has two new developments going up with a wide price range of houses. Also Granger is has the small town thing with the convenience of 141 going right to the metro.
