The end is near for the Big 12....

...at least as we know it now. The word is that the Pac 10 is once again seriously looking at expanding to a 12-team conference. I guarantee that University of Colorado is at the top of their list. And I'm pretty sure they will bolt if given the invitation.

With Missouri to the Big 10 and Colorado to the Pac 10, the Big 12 will lose the Denver and St. Louis markets (and part of the Kansas City market) - a very tough blow for a conference that doesn't have a lot of major markets to begin with.

And who do we thank for the demise of the Big 12? We thank Texas, Oklahoma, and Nebraska. Because of their opposition to equal revenue sharing, their greed has brought riches to their own institutions, but it will soon destroy the very conference they reside in. It's the same kind of greed that has led to the near implosion of our economy.

But don't feel sorry for them. They will survive. It's ISU, KSU, KU, OSU, and the rest who will suffer.

I don't mean to be overly dramatic, or overly doom and gloom, but I think the Big 12 is about to be cannibalized by the power conferences to the east and west. I only hope that Jamie is working on a plan B right now.

I agree that the problem lies with the revenue sharing. If the Big 12 shared money the way the other conferences did, teams would have no problem staying in the Big 12.

Re: The end is near for the Big 12....

Have you even looked at a map recently? Colorado is not going to the Pac-10 for the same reason that Hawaii isn't joining the Ivy League: because the geography DOESN'T MAKE ANY SENSE. Colorado isn't anywhere near the Pacific; they would have to fly every team to every competition. Not gonna happen.

Missouri to the Big 10 is only slightly less ridiculous, but I have no interest in rehashing that for the bajillionth time. Go read any thread on this site for the reasons why it won't happen. The Big 12 isn't going anywhere, like it or not. We're a power conference just like the ones on either side of us.

I also remember a game with Kansas when Cy (wore a huge suit then) went out to center field, squatted, and "pooped" a couple of chickens that had been dyed blue then chased them around.

If Colorado did go to the Pac 10, and I wouldn't be at all surprised if they did...... then the dominos would probably fall pretty quickly. The big question though, would be, whether the Big 10 actually wants Mizzou, or would they go in a another direction.

If that happens (2 North teams bolting) the B12 would probably look at some combination of TCU, Arkansas, Houston to fill the slots. Arkansas would be a clear #1 choice, but I'm not sure they would leave the SEC.

Colorado and the Pac 10 have been flirting for 15 years, so I wouldn't be so sure about throwing that out.

If the Pac 10 were to add a team, Colorado would definitely be in the top 2 most attractive additions for them, IMO along with maybe Boise St.

One can't argue that the B12's operating tactics need improvement though. The people at the healm of this power conference need to make a change. I for one and hoping all of this talk about losing some components of the B12 will jump start a reaction to better this conference.

Maybe all this talk will be enough for the Big 12 to get their heads out of their ***** and update their TV contract and start more revenue sharing.

If it is purely a financial move, then it won't be Boise. No TV market there. More likely to be Utah or BYU, because they would get the Salt Lake City TV market.

    This.

One thing that can't be assumed is that the Big 12 will just sit idly by and let it's teams be cherry picked by other conferences. Don't get me wrong, they might do that. But it could be that this is finally the thing that gets the Big 12 to wise up and change some things. I would assume that they wouldn't let a team like Mizzou/Colorado go without a fight, but I guess you never know.

Re: The end is near for the Big 12....

The Big 12 will not fall apart because the schools have to agree to let an individual school break conference ties without a financial penalty. I don't think there is any way that ISU, Nebraska, Missou or Colorado get out of the Big 12 because they would be slapped with a $5-10 million payout to the conference (see Boston College in 2005) - I don't think any university can justify paying that kind of money for athletics while their college is cutting academic departments/staff.

Re: The end is near for the Big 12....

I have heard before that Utah and BYU would be attractive to the Pac10. Makes more sense to me geographically, plus it maintains the 2 per state scenario they have going (especially if you divide Cali in two).

    Oregon - Oregon St
    Wash - Wash St
    Stanford - Cal
    UCLA - USC
    Az - Az St
    Utah - BYU

Plus that doesnt mess with the Big 12 :)

Nothing to see here mods. Keep moving.
