    Top Earthquake States

It's a little surprising about how many states that aren't California have earthquakes fairly regularly.

Move to Alaska if you want to feel earthquakes. A 5.5 is the strongest I've felt and it wasn't much. A 3 pointer would just feel like a big truck driving past your house.

Re: Breaking News, Small Earthquake in SE Nebraksa (LINK)

There have been a number of small earthquakes around here in the past two years, particularly around the town of Cleburne, which has had 7. Many more than normal. Somebody got the bright idea that it might be related to all of the natural gas drilling going on in the Barnett Shale. Turns out that there might be something to that...

More to come, I'm sure. Since the salt disposal wells have been closed, there have been no more quakes.

It's kind of amazing that Iowa is one of the few states that doesn't have earthquakes. Still, there was that one in Illinois a couple years ago and I know a few people in my hometown (Pella) felt it. Didn't feel it in Ames, but I bet I would where I live now in mid-Missouri.

Re: Breaking News, Small Earthquake in SE Nebraksa (LINK)

I experienced the '89 Loma Prieta earthquake (6.9) in the bay area, epicentered not far from our house in San Jose. Not a great memory.

I'm amazed at how many people I've spoken to from the midwest who say they would be really concerned with earthquakes if they were thinking of moving to California. Truth is, every area has it's natural disasters. I'm not a big fan of the possibility of a tornado marching through town either.

Just in that this earthquake was caused by the outrage still of Bo Pelini from the Big 12 Championship game

I would agree with that, its just fear of the unknown. I don't know what an earthquake feels like, but I've been through tornado warnings and never had anything bad happen to me (though the tornado game against Colorado could have been disastrous). I've been to California a few times and I'll admit the thought crossed my mind, especially when my friends jokingly did earthquake drills at ISU in preparation for my trip.

I just farted, we will see if that has any effect on the tectonic plates....

I had intended to quote jbhtexas's salt drilling here.

Don't worry. It's just the precursor to Yellowstone blowing up into a super volcano.

I really like their Chinese buffet, though. Seriously, I really liked that there. We lived 20 minutes to the west. For the 2+ years that our house was on the market down there, we would have been really concerned by this, wondering how our vacant house was.
