Academic standing of Big 10 expansion candidates

Didnt think this really fit into any of the existing threads about the Big 11 becoming the Big 12.2. But it is an interesting tidbit about academic rankings.

First and foremost, suck it Nebraska! Second, Colorado and KState are not listed...but I have a hard time believing either of those are better than us. WHICH MAKES US BIG 12 NORTH CHAMPIONS!!!

    No. 12: Northwestern
    No. 27: Michigan
    No. 39 (tie): Illinois
    No. 39 (tie): Wisconsin
    No. 47 (tie): Penn State
    No. 53 (tie): Ohio State
    No. 61 (tie): Purdue
    No. 61 (tie): Minnesota
    No. 71 (tie): Indiana
    No. 71 (tie): Michigan State
    No. 71 (tie): Iowa

As you can see, having all 11 members ranked among the nation's top 75 national universities is pretty impressive.

Now let's look at where some potential expansion candidates rank. I'm casting a very wide net here on purpose.

    No. 20: Notre Dame
    No. 34: Boston College
    No. 47 (tie): Texas
    No. 56 (tie): Pittsburgh
    No. 58 (tie): Syracuse
    No. 66 (tie): Rutgers
    No. 88 (tie): Iowa State
    No. 96 (tie): Kansas
    No. 96 (tie): Nebraska
    No. 102 (tie): Missouri
    No. 126 (tie): Utah
    No. 128: Kentucky

Schools ranked below 128 are classified in Tier 3 and Tier 4.

    Tier 3: Cincinnati
    Tier 3: West Virginia

Thanks for the link. Although there are many "rankings" of universities and colleges out there, the US News' one is certainly the most often quoted.
IF the Big Ten expands (and I think it's a pretty big if), it's obvious that ND, Rutgers, Pitt, Texas and Syracuse provide the best academic fit for the current Big Ten presidents.

The best football conference is the SEC and outside of Vandy they are a joke in regards to academics. This big ten is "one of the the worst" and they are pretty respectable. I think there is a correlation there. The addition is a no brainer. Rutgers. You get further east in a state rich in talent. You take a little portion of the new york veiwing audience. I just don't see another team that offers that opportunity other than Texas and they aren't going anywhere.

It's all snark from here on out

I wouldnt make a point of trash talking the teams in the big 12 who are lower than us when we are lower than every single dang one of the Big11.

is there really that much of a difference between 71 and 88? after the top 25, I think it gets pretty debatable.

Also, if I remember right, a lot of these rankings give out big points for med and law schools and things of that nature. Obviously it is in the board of regents interest that Iowa State not have these things, but it doesn't mean that Iowa State isn't a strong institution academically.

and "selectiveness". So Iowa's policy that basically gets everyone in the top 1\2 of their HS class eligible for admission hurts the rankings.

Re: Academic standing of Big 10 expansion candidates

it is generally thought that a 12th member would be from the Association of American Universities, which includes 62 schools (all of the current Big10). I was surprised that Notre Dame was not on this list.

    Association of American Universities
