Sirius XM Satellite Radio - Howard Stern

Howard Stern's 5-year contract will expire in 2010 and he's making comments about retiring.

I feel he's just posturing to keep keep the bosses guessing and for money.

He claims if it wasn't for him, Satellite would be in deeper trouble because he brought 12-million listeners from terrestrial radio.

Sirius paid him a bunch of stock - when the stock was double digits, now it's down to 60-cents.

Is he that popular? Do you think he'll really retire?

I never thought he was funny but he did bring a lot of people to Sirius. He also cost the company a ton of money. Sirus/XM have a lot of other problems and should just drop him when his contract ends.

    For comparison purposes:

Rush=Almost 15 million listeners per week

Stern=Almost 1.3 million listeners per week

I heard Rush got a new contract worth about $400 MM. This was reported to be close to the Stern deal, but most of it was in stock, which is worthless now.

I doubt Sirius has enough money, or incapable of getting financing, to pay Stern that kind of money again. I duuno - what are you all hearing?

Sirius/XM have 19 million subscribers. Do you really think 1.3 (where ever you got that from) listen to Stern out of 19? Stern's show runs all day long...I would bet at least half of all listeners are at the least casual Stern fans. I know serveral other people with it and not a single one do not listen to Stern...they all do. He's funny and he's the most successfull radio guy in radio history.

I prefer O&A, but do listen to Howard. He gets some great guests and gets them to open up. Hard to believe the 1.3 million number.

Don't ya think that Rush's number of listeners would decrease if they had to pay to listen to him?

Re: Sirius XM Satellite Radio - Howard Stern

Before the Sirius XM merger "Daily News" writer David Hinckley reported that "Arbitron has released its first-ever ratings for XM and Sirius, covering April-June 2007, and they show that in an average week, 1,225,000 listeners at some point heard Stern." That's the TOTAL for the week, so at any given moment, Stern has maybe a few hundred thousand listeners. Anyway you look at it, that's a sorry ratings number for the former terrestrial radio god.

That's because you have XM...do you even get him with your plan? I really don't care who does or doesn't like him but I will argue with anyone who think only 1.3 million people listen because it is way more than that.

I listen to Rivals radio every morning as well.

Re: Sirius XM Satellite Radio - Howard Stern

They don't know what is being listened to on XM. O&A spent an hour one day talking about the numbers, how they were gathered, and how they are wrong.

Re: Sirius XM Satellite Radio - Howard Stern

I listen to Howard almost daily, as well as Rivals Radio. If he goes I'll keep my sub as long as Iowa State is carried on them since I live out of state. I have heard that because of the impact he would have on share priceing and the company is that he can not allude to specifics in terms of coming back until the contract is signed due to the potential impact it would have on the stock price and could be considered price fixing or trading insider info. Suppossedly nobody on his entire staff knew about the Sirius deal the first time around until after it was signed to prevent any insider trading info from being shared.

Howard is good humor, can't listen with kids or wife though. Way overpaid, if they give him that kind of money again, they deserve to go broke.
