    Vacations - Florida

Looking to take my wife on vacation to somewhere in Florida (or somewhere on the ocean). Anyone have any recommendations on where to go and where to stay... possibly sometime after the first of the year (January or February)?

Key West if you are going in Jan/Feb. Anything north of Miami can be weather risky and cool (60-70). Key West is a great adult place to go. Lots of night activity, cruise ship stop, food, drink, entertainment and shopping. Also, fishing, snorkeling, para-sailing. See the sunsets from Mallory Square.

    Re: Vacations - Florida

We went to Key West the February before last for our honeymoon, and loved it. The weather was a bit better than normal for the first week of February.....the weather forecasts made us chuckle, because it was 80 every day, 70 every night, and no rain all week. The sights and feel of the island was really cool and laid back, and we walked the entire time, almost across the entire island, except to and from the airport. You will fly in on a little puddle jumper though. I wasn't overly fond of that.

I guess my wife wants to wait until possibly the fall. She doesn't want to take a chance on cool weather in January or February.

The year prior going to Key West, we went to Daytona Beach in February, and the water was freaking cold. My wife and I took pictures of each other in the surf, and my feet were numb within 30 seconds. Some dude was surfing in it, and I can only surmise that he must have been an eskimo.

    Re: Vacations - Florida

January/February can be iffy. The Keys have a pretty large gay population, so if you're not tolerant of that kind of lifestyle, it can be annoying. South Beach or Fort Meyers are probably your best bets for warm weather (70s). If you can delay the trip, we like March/April and November the best. As for accomodations, I have ne idea. We've got a condo on the Treasure Coast (North Hutchinson Island between Ft. Pierce and Vero Beach).

If you go in the fall, go in November. October is still huricane season. We usually the second week of November and come back right before Thanksgiving. The only bad thing about November is that the days are pretty short. Sunrise at 7, sunset at 5:30. But temps are normally in the low 80s.

I've been to Cocoa Beach a couple of times and loved it there. Of course, that was in the summer, and I have no idea what the weather is like on January/February. But, Cocoa Beach is just an hour from Orlando, and close to Cape Canaveral. And they have pretty affordable beach houses. I'd like to go back there some time...

My wife and I are "tolerent" of that kind of lifestyle and had a great time in the Keys. We have been to Fort Meyers with my parents and had a nice time there too, a lot of older folk but not a bad place

    Re: Vacations - Florida

We go to the Keys in Jan/Feb regularly. Fly into Ft. Lauderdale from KC usually and then drive down. The drive through the Keys on the loooong bridges over the water is not to be missed. We stay on Marathon, which is th 2nd largest island ( or Key as they say down there). It is about 45 miles from Key West. The atmosphere is definately laid back and normally 70 to 85 degrees. Great privately run restaurants and bars and the prices are very affordable. We have also stayed up and down both Florida coasts and its OK also---but very crowded everywhere in the Winter and not nearly as warm weather as in the Keys. Cabo, Mexico is also good and a little warmer in the Winter---but the Third world atmosphere can be a little unsettling.
