Football Recruiting: Rony Nelson Scouting Report

I had a great chat with Rony Nelson's JUCO head coach yesterday. Here are his thoughts on Nelson and what impact he could make on Iowa State as soon as next season.

Re: Football Recruiting: Rony Nelson Scouting Report

I have a feeling that Rony Nelson will have a similar effect on the 2010 defense that David Sims had on the 2009 defense.

Hopefully his impact will be felt immediately.

Ditto.....this guys speed will help our secondary more then any cover man ever could, he will bring quick pressure, which makes qbs make mistakes. MARK IT!!!!

The thing i know people will say is this juco or that juco didnt produce.

Well, rony has produced for two years at the juco level.

2008 State of California JUCO rankings:
    #4 tackles for loss
    #5 Sacks
    #10 Forced Fumbles

2009 State of California JUCO Rankings:
    #1 Sacks (12)
    #1 Tackles for loss (19.5)
    #12 Forced Fumbles (2)

Remember thats over 8 games!!!! Over a 12 game schedule the same production would be 18 sacks, 29 tfl and 3 forced fumbles.....

OH an FYI - ISU defense 2009 had 14 sacks as a whole!!!!!

The thing that is most interesting to me, Rony Nelson seems driven to prove people wrong, those types of kids you cannot put a star rating on because they simple out work people......the slogan is "He's got a continuous motor"....

Now think about the DL rotation:
Nelson, Neal, Maggitt, Laing, Parker, Scott at DE
Alburtis, Johnson, Ruempolhamer, Moore, Black, Mcdonough, Woods, Caspers (who by the way must be a decent athlete because he was a very successful HVT wrestler which = good footwork and leverage).

And if we add a standout JUCO DT (maybe Caspers) someone that could come right in and anchor that interior line, it would really allow for a lot of flex with the d line positions......

Can't wait to see the spring game already!!!!
