National tourney thoughts

I laughed, I cried, I <fill in the blank>'ed. Trent, Travis, and Kurt (Backes) will all be missed. All of them in the 100 victory club. Such heartbreak for Kurt--almost settled in for a pin twice but never quite got the points.

Here's what each individual wrestler contributed to the team score:

Fanthorpe 3.5
Gallick 6 (2 pins!)
Mueller 1
Sanderson 3
Trent 23
Travis 14
Turner 0
Varner 18
Backes 18
Zabriskie 2

Until you find something worth dying for, you're not really living.

All-Americans

Can anyone tell me how many All-Americans there were for us? I only saw the finals information.

In wrestling, you're an AA only if you place at Nationals, so we had 4. Backes, Paulson twins, and Varner.

I am pretty sure that the top 8 are All Americans, same as in NCAA Track & Field. I know Ohio State had 4 and they only had 2 wrestlers in the top 4 of thier respective brackets. So although you are correct that we only had 4, top 8 get the honor.

Did anyone else think that John Smith snubbed Mark Perry after the title bout w/ Hendricks? I mean, the kid was looking around for the Smith so he could shake his hand and he'd already left the mat. I think it makes it worse that Smith is his uncle.

The Backes match was maddening - I was screaming at the TV so much my cat decided to do some "hot laps" around the couch! Kurt wrestled a great match until OT, it seemed he almost conceded the take down at the end. He was so close to pinning his man 2 times, but always seemed to run out of time in the period allowing the kid from American off the hook.

Varner's match had me confused - the kid from Nortwestern must have been pretty good because Jake didn't seem to show much offense. I wasn't able to see any of his previous matches, but it made me wonder how he wrestled well enough to be in the title match. Making it to the finals is great experience though, and now that he knows he can get there, let's hope Cael can motivate him into a 3-time champ!

Too bad we couldn't have pushed Minnesota a bit harder with one or two more victories (Varner, Backes). I don't know that it would have mattered - that HWT from Minnesota was a beast! He probably would have pinned his guy if they needed it or not!

We've got 6 guys coming back who qualified for Nationals so the future looks bright!

I think Coach Smith is in an awkward situation at best. Shake the hand of your opponent/nephew and look bad to your own school/fans or shake his hand congratulate him and have your fan base all over your ***** for the entire off season.
I think he was in a lose-lose situation. He can always deal with his nephew when the media and crowd isn't around.

True, but if you watch most of the other matches the winner went over to the other coaches and shook their hands. Seemed that it was the right thing to do. Besides, do you think that there is still some bitterness that he went to Iowa and not OSU?

Re: National tourney thoughts

Nonsense. It's very common for both wrestlers to shake hands with the opposing coaches after the match. OSU fans would not have been upset with Smith for shaking hands afterwards.

Strange actions by Smith nonetheless. Perhaps the shock of Hendricks losing just threw him off and he forgot about sticking around. Hard to tell.

ISU had the opportunity to drive the stake into Minnesota at the start of Session 4, when there were 7 guys going. Unfortunately, the 3 in the consolation round all lost right off the bat. That hurt. There was alot of pressure on the freshman in the consolation round, but it was probably a great learning experience for them. I'm sure the coaching staff will review the preparation for that Session, and look for ways to improve. Learn and move on...

Re: National tourney thoughts

Absolutely.

ISU really needed to do some damage in the wrestlebacks on the last day. Getting a couple of AAs (8th place or better) out of Fanthorpe, Sanderson, and Zabriskie would have been big in the team race. Shoot, an 8th place finish would have awarded us an extra 3 points (ignoring advancement and bonus points). It goes up from there:

7th = 4 pts
6th = 6 pts
5th = 7 pts
4th = 9 pts
3rd = 10 pts

There was definitely an opportunity there. Unfortunately, it just didn't work out.
