    Newest commit Matt Thomas

Matt Thomas was just ranked by rivals.com as a 2 star cornerback. Previously unranked, and for that matter not even in the rivals system until word of his commitment came out on Sunday.

I like how our committment list is looking for next year---22 so far

    Breakdown by state:
    Texas---7
    Cali-----5
    Florida--4
    Iowa---3
    Other---3

Thats the way it should be every year---If ISU could pick 3 out of the top 10 guys in the state, I would be happy...

PS---I have it from a pretty good source that Caspers is going to play DT at ISU. Played there in high school and was pretty successful I guess...

We are really building a pipeline into California with Ash recruiting that territory. I don't think we've ever had as many potential recruits come from that area. I personally love this. It's virtually untapped territory by B12 schools so it gives us a big advantage being one of the few schools in the B12 scouring the area. If a recruit isn't huge on the Pac 10 we're right there saying we play in the B12 and we want you. Chris Ash is simply a great edition to this staff.

If we try to expand in thes areas we'll be fighting sCUm, which offers the same opportunities and has been in a position to recruit out there for a number of years.

Now if we insert the instability and general happiness of the....faithful?....in Boulder, that certainly helps.

Maybe this is my opinion, but he definitely looks like an athlete. I know that really means nothing but he looks like he would be a good football player.

I don't really (and most people for the most part) rely on the rivals star system to judge the talent of a player. Especially in the state of Texas where there are so many D1 kids each year. For all I know this kid was stuck behind a couple stud D1 players the last couple of years and had to wait till they left before he got some quality playing time to show what he could do. Thus the reason he wasn't rated until this year.

    Re: Newest commit Matt Thomas

A lot of the recruiting websites rely a lot on camps and who is offering a kid.

If a kid doesn't go to all of the camps, the websites wont get to rating them until they hear about how well they are doing in their senior season. If a kid is at a HS that does not pump out D1 talent, there is less chance a recruiting website hears about them early.
All this affects ratings and how many big schools offer right away.

There are so many kids out there it would be impossible for Rivals etc. to watch tape on all of them and rate them all at the beginning of their senior year.

Couldnt agree more....the two areas i always thought we should recruit harder is California and Ohio....both states are talent ridden and aside from the local schools filling their needs of the majority of 4-5* kids, it leaves a lot of quality 3-4* kids looking for a major school to get a schollie from.

But, i think that California has been tapped by big 12 schools in the past namely Colorado and Nebraska. Both have been recruiting cali hard for several years.

    Case in point:
2010 of the 11 commits, 6 are from Cali.
2009 they had 5 commits from cali.
2008 they had 7 commits including the nations #1 RB Scott, 3 4* kids and 2 3* kids.

There's talent in them there hills - head West wise recruiters, head West!!!!!

    Nebraska
    2010 - 2 (2-3*) they only have 3 from Nebraska!!!!
    2009 - 7 (1-4* and 6-3*) they only had 2 from nebraska
    2008 - 3 (3-3*) had 5 from Nebraska...

Funny that everyone thought with Pellini back, that he would be more instrumental in utilizing the local players, in fact its just the opposite.

ISU is in deed recruiting a talent rich pool of California, but, there are other big 12 schools that have identified that this area has a lot of talented kids to go around!!!!

    Now lets get into OHIO!!!!
Compared to the State of Iowa who has an evaluation of the states top players and usually has around 8-10 that are rated as 3* are above, OHIO has 75!!!!! They can't all go to Cinci or Ohio State, not to mention, not many Big 12 schools are recruiting Ohio outside the top 15 players....Here's a couple of kids that we would love to have as commits:

    Jewone Snow - Yahoo! Sports
    Jayrone Elliott - Yahoo! Sports
    Jake Ryan - Yahoo! Sports

Its funny that all three of these LB prospects are comparable to Luke Zelon that were recruiting from....California!!!!

DING DING DING Ty - your 100% correct and a winner!!!

I saw this article about the Lancaster Texas Secondary from a year ago.....Nations Best

This is a story from 2008.

Rivals.com Football Recruiting - Lancaster secondary is nation's best

Obviously these secondary coaches and d coordinators are teaching these young men very well....they've put 7 players to Div. 1 schools in the last 2 years.

He could be one of those guys that blossoms and when he does, everyone says "How'd we miss him?"

I hope so - glad to have you here Matt...

Currently he is the third highest rated corner on his own high school team. So maybe he just hasn't gottent he chance or exposure needed to be known as a good player.

    Re: Newest commit Matt Thomas

I think the lack of exposure that comes from playing behind (or along side of) elite talent is not to be understated and think some people in this thread have made some good points.

I was watching the SEC championship game and remembering them talking about how Bama's QB played at South Lake Carroll behind Chase Daniel and really didn't take a snap until his senior year. Granted, playing a national powerhouse he may not have been "under the radar", but it goes to show how many of these kids can be great D1 players and not even see the field that much until later in their HS careers.

Agree. The Pac 10 and MWC recruit Cali and that is about it. It is underrecruited
