    DirectTV owners

OK, I am looking to make the jump to satelitte, nothing but headaches with Mediacom the past month and now they are going to loose CBS. I have never had satelitte and have some questions.
    • Do I need a box for every TV? I do have 3 HDTV's and 1 nonHD. If not do I need a phone line to connect them (don't have phone lines or service)?
    • Should I order direct through DirectTV online or should I go through the local independent contractors to buy? I see DirectTV is offering free install. I would like find the group that will do the best job of actually setting it up.
    • What's the best way to get internet with DirectTV? Qwest??? Although can i get DSL without phone lines?
Any other info I should know would be great.

    Thanks -

With DirecTV, yes you'll need a box for every TV. Dish Network does offer "multi room" receivers.

Yes on the boxes. You only need the phoneline if you want to order movies on demand, or if you would like them to monitor your viewing habits. I went through Qwest for satellite, phone and internet, and I'm fairly pleased. Make sure that when you are getting comparison prices, that you ask how long each offer lasts, and the rate that it will go to after the promotional period.

    Re: DirectTV owners

I've had good installers and bad installers. It's kind of a crap shoot. I've always gotten free installs on all of my upgrades, etc.

Keep in mind that you will pay a monthly fee for each box you have. Also, if you have a friend (hint, hint) that currently has Directv, you can get their account number and say they referred you, and that friend gets a $100 credit on their bill.

You definitely don't need a phone line, but it is kind of cool to have caller ID show up on the screen. I actually still get that without a phone line, since I have connected my box to the internet for On Demand stuff.

I ordered DTV online and had no problems. And they may tell you that you need a phone line but you don't. You may try to get more than 1 HD receiver for free (usually they will give you the first one free) by talking to them.

You can get internet through Qwest. And yes, you can get it without a phone line.

    Re: DirectTV owners

we have bundle with qwest and directv, we only pay qwest (they send directv their portion automatically) you dont have to get a phone line to directv receivers but if you want movies you will. 1 phone line to 1 receiver works, you wont have to connect all receivers to phone if you choose to do so, but you will only be able to order movies from that receiver. you'll have to get hd recievers for all hd tvs if you want hd on them. i love directv except when the clones played on versus this past fall other than that i have no complaints. we used to have internet through a local cable co up here before and it constantly broke down or would not work. since we've had qwest (over a year now) it has always worked, not once has it ever broke down or stopped working. as for the installation, we had 3 guys come out and they were done in less than an hour and did a great job. showed me different options and settings on the receiver. my sister (who lives in des moines) had an absolute horrible first experience with their installation guy. he didnt really do anything except dig a hole in their back yard for no reason except he didnt want to get on their roof and then told them he couldnt get a signal and left. (and left the hole) they called and complained got a new guy to come out, he was done in 45 mins and easily got the dish on their roof. who knows, its luck of the draw just like with any service.

    Re: DirectTV owners

Unless the directv installer goes the SWM route (unlikely)

    Here is my suggestion.

#1 Get everything you ever thought of getting right now before you're under contract. Once you're under contract it's a lot harder to get good deals. If I was you I'd be inclined to get 3 HD DVR's. Once you have one DVR you don't anymore for the other ones in the house. Also by doing this they will have to run 2 cables to each of your TV's. Better to have them do this than you.

#2 You don't need a phone line for Directv. An internet connection near the DVR's is a nice to have but not mandatory.

#3 Internet-You can keep mediacom for internet but you'll pay something like $60/month. The 1.5 DSL is not as fast a mediacom but 1/2 the price. Both were reliable for me so that's a non-issue........wait you don't have a phone line? If you don't have a phone line and have no need for one you may just want to stick with mediacom. If you get DSL you'll need a basic phone line.

#4 I would go through Directv for the install. Starting last year they took over the install process and they are now very detailed. When they came and upgraded my DVR they were required to take pictures of their work, they replaced some switches that were not up to code, they checked the satellite itself and put in an extra bolt, and then a week later someone came back to my house to check on the installers work.

As far as the phone service with DSL. Yes you can get "naked DSL" without having phone service but when i ran the numbers it was only a couple of dollars more to have DSL with local only phone service compared to naked DSL.

Not anymore. I believe Qwest just changed this...you can get DSL w/o a phone line...you just have to pay like $5 more per month.

We are saving more than just a few bucks by having DSL and no phone line.

    Re: DirectTV owners

make sure you get an HD receiver DVR. Directv needs a separate box for each tv, but you can have 2 connections in each box allowing you to record one show and watch another at the same time, or even record 2 shows and watch a previously recorded show at the same time.
