    CBS & Mediacom

The feud between these two seem to be going strong.

I got a message today while watching football that the local CBS stations anticipate Mediacom dropping them after December 31st and suggested buying an over the air atenna or go to dish network.

Hope they get it worked out. If not, I'll be tuning CBS out. I don't watch them much anyway.

I take it you are referring to Sinclair owned stations? (so itd be Fox in the des moines area)

I hope mediacom stands up to them this time. Its pretty much BS that they want to charge mediacom ridiculous amounts to air something that goes out for free over the airwaves.

Hopefully they do work something out, or else we'll both be looking for a place to watch the Super Bowl

I still don't understand why network affiliates get money from cable or satellite providers in exchange for carrying their channel.....which can be received for free by anyone within broadcast range.

It almost seems like those affiliates should be paying the cable/satellite providers for their help in strengthening their signal, not the other way around.

no kidding. cable=more viewers=their advertising space is worth more.

Not true. The major networks are more profitable for advertisers. Hence why shows like American Idol (Fox), Dancing with the Stars (ABC) and Survivor (CBS) are still on the air. Network stations = all viewers = BIG$$$$$

I think you might misunderstand. The major networks as a whole have greater viewership than a cable network. However, a local station's range is expanded by the cable network, getting them in more homes and putting their advertisers in front of more viewers. I mean, it can be hard getting the OTA stations in ames, much less more rural areas.

    Re: CBS & Mediacom

Uh oh. It seems like this has happened before...oh wait it has. Why does it seem like mediacom is always in the middle of a feud. This will be the second time a local network will be shut down because of mediacom not reaching an agreement. Plus, JP said people back home may not be able to watch the bowl game because mediacom won't give in. What is the deal mediacom? You don't hear about these problems from other cable providers.

The major networks are looking to tap cable revenue as their audiences disappear. Desparate Times make Desparate Moves.

Uh, yeah. The point is, cable and satellite providers carry the network channels and give those access who may normally be out of range of the air signal. Thus, cable/satellite providers increase the viewership of the network channels and should not be charged for carrying the channels.

The networks (and Sinclair, specifically) have stated during these disputes that their networks add value to the cable/satellite packages that customers subscribe to, and that this is the reason they should get a cut of the profits. I would argue the opposite, as I can get any of the local networks simply by hitting the "input" button on my remote and changing the input to my OTA antenna. I don't experience any added value because the networks are on cable, because I can get them free. Instead, I'm essentially paying for free network channels because of the fees they charge cable/satellite providers, and it sucks.

Neither of these are mediacom's fault. NFL network, the Big 10 Network, and Sinclair have come to mediacom demanding that they be put on a basic tier, and demand an exorbitant price per subscriber for retransmission (you wonder why cable bills have gone up since they caved to big 10 and sinclair the first time?).

And actually, you do hear about these things from other cable providers. Sinclair has had several such disputes:

That's because you probably have not lived in a place that had a cable provider other than Mediacom.

Comcast has fits with a lot of stations if it does not have a stake in them. Time Warner has went to battle on more than one occasion too.

Yes, you do. You just haven't paid attention to the other big cable providers as there are no other providers in this area to compete with Mediacom. Comcast had the same dispute with Sinclair that Mediacom did a few years ago. Comcast also held out on the BTN for almost as long as Mediacom did.....and Comcast is MUCH larger than Mediacom.

Everybody had good points. But I am just sick of mediacom's subscribers being victim to all of these disputes whether having to pay more or get less.

I'm OK with it because I know that if Mediacom were to just cave every time a provider wanted to jack retransmission rates, my cable bill would be even higher than it already is.
