    Sledding accident

Girls Hit Concrete During Sledding Crash - Des Moines News Story - KCCI Des Moines

Why you you ever build a ramp that launches you on to a concrete parking lot? I feel sorry for the families involved but how could you knowingly sled on that hill and think it'd be safe?

Reminds me of a 5ft ramp we built on this steep hill as a kid. You would get a ton of air and when you hit the ground your teeth would rattle and your brain would come loose. I cant imagine what it would be like to hit pavement. Frozen ground is bad enough.

That really stinks. If I recall, in my younger days, thinking ahead wasn't my strong suit either.

Exactly, we would always build big ramps as kids, (although not near concrete parking lots) . The 2-3 seconds of airtime was completely worth the resulting pain when you hit the snow.

We thought back then it was especially great when a storm (like this one) dumped a bunch of wet snow that you could pack up easily, and then it got super cold and froze that ramp like a rock. We would be flying off that thing and busting sleds. Thinking back, its amazing something like this never happened to me or my friends.

I'm surprised there haven't been any serious injury reports yet from the hill by the Ice Arena (I think it's the 18th hole on the disc golf course?)

College students are too stupid to report them

and I guess I always did jumps on my snowboard...little better than a sled...minus the time I had the brilliant idea to try and flip.

    Re: Sledding accident

We used to sled on the 8th hole at the Ankeny Golf & Country Club. You had to ditch your tube near the bottom to avoid going into a rocky creek. People often forgot and ended up with some injuries. Worst I ever saw was a broken arm but I'm sure it could have been alot worse.

We always talked about building a ramp and trying to jump the creek but never did, I guess we weren't that industrious.

    Re: Sledding accident

    Sad story.

Reminds of an episode of The Office, the depression episode where they tossed a watermelon off the roof onto a trampoline as a test preceding Michael jumping off onto it.

Sounded great, initially looked fun but as soon as it was set into motion, both (Michael and Dwight) immediately knew it was a bad idea.

    Re: Sledding accident

My daughters goes to pre-school right next to this school. We have been by there and I have actually been waiting for a time to take her sledding there, but may reconsider. They do have signs posted to sled at your own risk. I am suprised they let people even sled there.

    Re: Sledding accident

Growing up in Omaha as young child I was witness to a kid going head first down a hill at Fontanelle Park. Kid smacked head on with a boulder, blood everywhere, we got him to safety and called emergency services. He survived, but I've never seen so much blood in my life.
