Top tier coaches pay for themselves

    http://hosted2.ap.org/TNMOR/FTBALLNE...ffd7d2591b5309

As the linked article shows, a top tier coach that produces wins on the football field will make the money flow to the university...both in the athletic department as well as in the other areas of the university. They pay for themselves...typically, many times over.

I cheer for two teams, Iowa State and whoever is playing the hawkeyes.

Absolutely. I love it when people go after coaches or athletic departments when we start talking about cuts in the universities. Heck, even programs like ISU that dont have a ton of wins bring in money to the university, as they keep alumni connected to the university. You can almost think of money spent on athletics as marketing $.

Thats the biggest thing right there. You would have to ask your self how does a small private school's fund raising compare to that of a big university in terms or ease of getting donations.

Successful athletic teams also produce increased applications for admittance to a university. I remember reading a study a while back of how applications to Georgetown were very closely correlated with the Hoyas success on the BB court.

I think it will collapse sooner then later, kinda like banking and large corporations. It is silly to pay a college coach 5 million. They may be worth the return, but it is getting ridiculous what they charge for tickets and parking.

They talked about this with Drake a couple years ago as well.

Since we are an elite team now, let's go get that One Cyclone Moment.

It's a sad commentary on what people value and what they are willing to pay for.

"Where your treasure lies, so does your heart"

"We are first and foremost an educational institution that values integrity, honesty and treating others with fairness and respect".

-ISU President Gregory Geoffroy; circa May 2003.

I am not so sure, these successful schools have waiting lists for people to buy tickets in many cases. Even in hard times people are still donating.

Jut because people are making large donations to athletic programs does nto mean they are excluding other areas of donations.
