GF's employer making her take PTO for yesterday...

Even though all of their clinics were closed. If the employees didn't have PTO than it would be unpaid...Is this a normal practice or just tight purse strings?

Normal. My company did the same thing. Even though they made everyone go home around 1, if you didn't go in yesterday you have to take a full 8 hours of vacation or go unpaid.

This is somewhat normal. If people managed to come in, but things were shut down early, those that were there get paid. Those that do not come in at all don't get anything paid.

OP sounded like no one went in at all but they are all required to take PTO. That doesn't sound right to me.

I guess I would say there would have to be an option to work if you have to take PT. If they are closed, what do they expect?

I would have loved the opportunity to use PTO yesterday! Would have beat driving to CR and back from Iowa City on hwy 380, 3 hours roundtrip!

Normal. Tell her to tell her bf to quit whining. it is unbecoming.

Same thing here. Nothing strange about it. Not sure how you can expect to get a free day's pay for no work without using vacation.

Re: GF's employer making her take PTO for yesterday...

When our company closes the plant, and we're thus unable to work, then we are paid for it without having to use PTO. It shows up as "Emergency Closure Pay."

If the plant is open and we don't/can't make it, then we use PTO or don't get paid.

I think this is a pretty standard practice for non-salary employees. I don't know if it's right or not but I haven't heard of too many places that do otherwise.

Its not right of course, but most businesses will do whatever they can to make/save money whether it is right or not. Especially now.

If you work for the state you had to take vacation or use a furlough day.

What makes that not right? Was work done? No. Why should the employee be paid?

I'm salaried and have to use vacation for yesterday. It would have been great to get the day off and still get paid, but I'm not angry that it didn't work out that way. For the company I work for (somewhere around 8,000 people in CR), that would have been millions of dollars that they'd be giving away.
