    Interview pet peeves

I need a break from getting ready for mine so here's one for everyone who dreads or likes interviews.

What are you pet peeves from an interviewer or interviewee perspective?

My personal is the uncomfortable pause from interviwer after giving an answer. Drives me nuts as the wheels turning in my head wonder if I said too much or the wrong thing.

"Where do you see yourself in 5 years?"

My life has turned for the better so much in the past 5 years that had I been working toward what I could have pictured for myself back then I would have missed the opportunities that have come my way. I'd rather be seen as an oppotunist.

The worst is interviewing with people who give you no feedback physically or verbally. Usually when you answer a question someone will nod along or you can tell if they aren't following you. I hate when they just look down and give you nothing.

Why do you want to work here?
    For money.

Not sure I have a pet peeve, but I did have one guy tell me that "this would look good on my resume". Assuming, of course, that I would hire his dumb ***.

I always hated when attractive women were the interview, it was a distraction. I guess I hated it but I loved it.

    Re: Interview pet peeves

I've had the 5 year question. Finally found a decent answer from a techy perspective.

I hate the lack of feed back in a conversation. Almost shows the interviewee that maybe you don't want to work for this person.

Reminds me of the the Mitch Hedburg joke:

"I had a job interview at an insurance company once and the lady said "Where do you see yourself in five years?" and i said "Celebrating the fifth year anniversary of you asking me this question”

I hate when they respond with "ok" or "all right." Then the emotionless pause.

When asked where you see yourself in any period of time I always respond "your boss." Ok I only did that once but it worked.

I like to break the tension by making inappropriate sexual advances. No point in ignoring the elephant in the room.

    Re: Interview pet peeves

You know it's funny. Most people actually think people interview them because they want to see if they're right for the job on the "technical" level. No, if someone is interviewing you it's because they do think you might be right for the job technically but they want to see if you're an idiot or not and *know how to communicate* and work with other people without ******* them off.

If you're an interviewee, you better make sure you can communicate efficiently in these or else in my book, you lose major points. If the interviewer is a very good communicator and the interviewee can't keep the conversation, then that is bad in my book.

It's a two edged sword though really. If the interviewer sucks at communicating, I hope they don't really grade the interviewee down if they don't show strong communication skills. There's nothing worse than having a manager who can't communicate. Three years ago I had a manager who was one of the most aloof managers of all time. This guy, you'd try and have a normal conversation and his demeanor just sucked. Year end reviews say "You need to work on your communication skills." I go to a new manager, every year "Outstanding communications skills." You tell them about it and they say "you have to be kidding me...."

So keep in mind, it's not one sided but unfortunately interviewers are usually too stupid to realize they can create or destroy spontaneity of conversation.
