    Ames Road Conditions

Does anyone know how the road conditions in Ames are, are the plows out cleaning the streets?

    Re: Ames Road Conditions

I've seen plows out, but I haven't been outside of my building today. We have 4 ft drifts in front of our door

Other than getting out of Freddy Court, I had no problem getting around at about 25mph throughout the city.

Sweet, thanks a lot. From my apartment I cannot see the main road, Mortenson, so I was just wondering how things were looking out there.

Plows were out this morning. Our street looks okay for having about a foot of snow on it earlier. Drive slow and cautiously if you go out. I mean when you go out.

    Re: Ames Road Conditions

The parking lots and side streets are the worst. The main roads aren't great but don't have a foot of snow on them.

Glad to hear things are at least a little doable... I need to get to Pint Night at Olde Main tonight! Mmmm, Reindeer Fuel...

I also remember a game with Kansas when Cy (wore a huge suit then) went out to center field, squatted, and "pooped" a couple of chickens that had been dyed blue then chased them around.

    Re: Ames Road Conditions

Yeah, I live in university west apartments and our parking lot does not look that bad but the street to the apartments looks like it has not been plowed recently due to the drift. Luckily, my car does not appear to be piled in snow and I won't have to dig it out tomorrow morning .

    Re: Ames Road Conditions

I live in Campustown. I went downtown about 3 pm and it was like a ghost town, with a lot of places closed. Only one line open in the main postoffice, and the clerk said no mail was received today and that no time guarantees would be issued with today's mail due to the closure of several interstates. Caseys I go to was out of gas--no deliveries today.
I did not think the Ames roads were all that good; driving downtown past the stadium on the four-lane road (3rd st.), you could only use one lane each way, and the intersections were only partially plowed. I think it will only worsen in the near term when the winds do their work overnight.

Yeah, I'm not sure about some of you, but do you think that Ames does a good job at plowing? I'm in the opinion of no and I'm comparing it to my hometown in Illinois.

Ames does NOT do a good job on the streets. Intersections are always a mess and slippery and never cleaned as wide as the street. Pretty sad..

    Re: Ames Road Conditions

I was out for the past few hours. I was a little surprised that we couldn't find a road that hadn't had at least one pass through it to make it doable. Of course, there were trouble spots, but unless you are trying, you weren't going to get stuck. Country roads on the other hand... State Avenue south of town was blown shut out by the ISU poultry farm. Didn't try others after that...

It could be better, I guess. I suppose buying more trucks and equipment would help, but that's expensive. My comparison towns in snow areas would be Mason City and State College, PA. Mason City is by far the best of the three.
I do know if I come back in another life as a city manager, I'm pouring tons of $$$ into public works/street maintenance and snow removal. Nothing seems to garner more public concern than snow removal and pothole repair.

I don't know; don't have a good basis for comparison. I was referring to the main arteries in my previous post, and they were not good. But then the blasted wind blew hard all day, and at the intersections where there is a lot of open space bordering the road, as there is at the intersection of 3rd st. and Univ. Blvd. near the stadium, drifting is constant. By the way, there are 15 farmers who have a contract with Ames to plow the smaller, side streets, and I have no idea how good their work is.

    Re: Ames Road Conditions

It just seems like when it snows, you never see the plows as to compared to my hometown I see them often. Also, when they do plow, they never seem to do a good job at it the first time. I'm sure money has a lot to do with it considering half of the city is college students and don't pay taxes.
