Insight Bowl Trip - Avoid renting a car.

I received a helpful hint from friends who are in the Tempe area. They suggested getting a hotel along the light rail line to avoid having the expense of renting a car. The light rail is accessible from the airport and it also runs near the stadium.

Here's a link that lists the hotel within walking distance from the rail line.

You almost have to rent a car to truly see things in the Phoenix area. The area is so spread out, and taxi charges will count up in a hurry.
I am definitely renting a car.

True, if doing a lot of sightseeing is in your plans, but many haven't factored in time for much other than the game and associated festivities. Might as well save some cash and avoid the hassle of driving (not sure about that time of the year, but traffic can be brutal in the Phoenix/tempe area).

this. we're staying up scottsdale road a couple miles, and figuring we'll just cab it a couple times. Especially since we'd probably want to go to the ASU bars and cab it back anyways.

If you are doing sightseeing, and have time, make a trip up to sedona. Great scenery up there.

Good point - and traffic IS brutal in Phoenix in December.

Yeah...from my understanding, the ASU "campustown" area is within walking distance of the stadium, many hotels, and the rail line.

I think it will be fairly easy to be without a car down there and we can always grab a cab for any one-off trips we need to take.

Yes, ASU Stadium is right on campus - the location is striking, actually, built up against the side of a mountain. Tempe is LOADED with things for adults, and I'd bet the only place that tops Mill Ave. in Tempe on New Year's Eve is Times Square.

Re: Insight Bowl Trip - Avoid renting a car.

Not only is the traffic brutal, the rental cars are REALLY expensive in Phoenix. If you decide you're going to get a rental car, try to get one from a location that's not at the airport. You'll save a lot of money in fees! Most of the major hotels have a rental car desk either in their lobby or close by.
