an email sent to me from a friend

i ranted to him about how bad the bcs sucks and he replied with this. makes some interesting points most of which i agree with.

I dont ever want to hear the BCS argue the justification of its system
based on competitve fairness ever again. This was a chance for the BCS
to pit their power teams against 3 upstart programs and finally prove
that the system works. Instead, they cop out, knowing for a fact that
logical matchups would have resulted in both Boise and TCU remaining
undefeated, raising more criticism of their system. The Fiesta Bowl
wanted a compelling matchup. Had they forgotten this matchup already
happened last year in the Poinsettia Bowl? Had they forgotten that it
brought in a whopping 34,000 fans? A huge oversight that could cost
the city of Tempe millions? Of course not. This wasnt a chosen matchup
by the Fiesta Bowl. The powers above forced them into it.

Why? Because of Tim Tebow. He's been the poster boy for NCAA football
for 3 years and now curiously, after a loss in the SEC title game,
Florida is on to take on Cincinnati? Many could argue, and probably
very successfully that Cincinnnati is the weakest of the undefeated.
The BCS did not want Tebow to face TCU or Boise and potentially send
their star out a loser. Can you imagine the final images of Tebow's
career as weeping on the sidelines after the SEC championship followed
by another SEC blowout loss to a MWC team? No chance in hell. BCS will
send Tebow out a winner after they paste a coachless Cincinnati team.

Had Florida won the SEC championship, all would have been well in BCS
land. Alabama would not have gotten the compassion that Florida has
gotten and would have gone in to face a TCU team and we all would have
gotten the Boise/Iowa matchup we all thought we were getting,
regardless of what the SEC outcome was. UF would have gotten their
Tebow Championship game. Fiesta was forced to take it in the pants
this year for the BCS cause and for our beloved Tim Tebow.
Besides, there is still a good shot that the NC game is incredibly
close. This gives UF and Tebow an outside chance of blowing away UC
and getting a share of the National Championship. Pitting TCU and
Boise neutralizes those teams because the BCS knows this will be a
    close game.

Maybe I'm taking crazy pills, but its just a thought...

Florida has no shot at the National Championship. That was part of the agreement with the BCS. There will never be a tie again, the winner of that game is the only National Champion that year.

Can't the AP still vote for whomever they like?

Yeah, I really don't think the BCS cares that much about Tebow. That and I really don't know if Cincinnati is the worst undefeated, so who knows, maybe Tebow will be sent out crying...

AP doesn't have to go with the BCS champ.

According to the BCS. The AP can name their own national champion. (see USC & LSU in 2003)

Re: an email sent to me from a friend

I will be doing a blog this week and there will be some expansion of your points. I have a theory on a couple match ups. I will say that since they came out, I have been infuriated. As for the "no tie" point. That is not true. There could be a tie in terms of the public opinion. Say Oregon Had gone undefeated and won their bowl game. Use anyone in that scenerio. There always exists the possibility of a tie when there are conferences. I am not against conferences at all. It is just that one team from each conference can go undefeated. If that happens, someone is left out. I would say last year, you cannot give me a reason that Utah was not as deserving as Florida was. I am not saying Utah was the better team, I am just saying it is hard to make a case that they were not worthy. That is how I will feel about TCU when they beat Boise handily.

    I'm on Twitter too: Tre4ISU

    Or so I have read.

Yep. It won't happen this year, but there is nothing stopping the AP from voting Cincinnati or TCU as national champion after the bowls if they want to.

I don't believe that the AP National Champion is recognized by anyone other than the AP and the school that wins that award. I could be wrong, but that is the way I understand it.

Re: an email sent to me from a friend

As most people have said. The AP can name their own champion.

LSU defeated Oklahoma in the 2004 Sugar Bowl, securing the BCS National Championship, as the ESPN/USA Today Coaches' Poll is contractually obligated to vote the winner of the BCS National Championship Game #1. Meanwhile, when USC beat Michigan in the 2004 Rose Bowl, the majority of AP voters refused to drop their end-of-season #1 after the bowl win, and USC secured the AP title.

    and

The American Football Coaches Association has contractually agreed to select the winner of the game as the national champion in its final USA Today Coaches' Poll of the season.[1] Thus, the winner of the game is awarded the AFCA National Championship Trophy in a postgame ceremony. The winner is also automatically awarded the National Football Foundation's MacArthur Trophy.[2] However, the Associated Press and the Football Writers Association of America do not participate in the BCS and may award their well respected national championship trophies to schools other than the BCS National Championship Game winner.

Perception of the AP championship is diminished a bit now that the AP poll is no longer part of the BCS formula (they were part of the formula in 2003). However, people still pay a lot of attention to the AP poll. If they were to name a different champion, it would only add to the anti-BCS buzz.

I think it's important that we as fans keep advocating at all times for a College Football Playoff -- 11 Conference Champions + 5 At-Large Berths.

Football is weird because it is the only NCAA sanctioned sport without an actual NCAA champion. All the bowl games have very loose affiliations with the NCAA. It really is like a whole different season.

This is true. Even the BCS National Championship is not a true NCAA championship. It's just the championship awarded by the coalition of six BCS conferences.
